I woke up bummed out this morning. My head has been invaded by this Sarah gal... the same one that's McCain's running mate. It's really the stats, those daily percentage points that our media loves to inject into every newscast. I can't keep up with them. They're tossed out like little dog treats and whoever gets one seems to enjoy it and sticks around with their ego wagging hoping to get another morsel. I challenge anyone to remember all those little percentage points - '54% white catholic women support McCain while only 37% do'... 'McCain's popularity has shot up since introducing Palin with the percentile of 54% over Obama's now diminished 41%.' (These are merely guesses using my memory... but they're probably fairly close today, Tuesday 9.08.08...)
I heard that more men support McCain since Palin stepped in versus the women. Odd. Men are visual creatures has got to have a great deal to do with it, wouldn't you say? But how any man can stand to listen to that voice.... mercy!
The evangelical vote will probably soar with the knowledge that Sarah was part of the Assembly of God. She still hangs on to those fundamentalist beliefs. I don't get it.
Like I wrote somewhere here yesterday - we all have to wait until the debates to see who trumps the other, that's always the case. Presidential races are run using any method available. Unlike the Olympic events which test for drug usage, the Presidential candidates are never tested for the drugs of lies and distortions. They throw out these comments like tacks on the road to hopefully flatten the tire of their opponent. Republican's seem much better with the 'winning is everything' mentality... they really mean that. They have no morals or compassion when it comes to elections - they pull out all the stops if necessary and will do anything to win. I have to wonder why we Americans want somebody like that in the highest office in the land. Knowing the lies and deceptions, the untruths and exaggerations that are delivered with straight faces would have to continue when they take office, wouldn't they? I think the Bush administration is a current and perfect example of that.
Now I'm not saying the Democrats never lie or cheat to win. But I am saying the Republicans are far better at deception than Democrats. I'd reckon several Democrats are envious of their opponents know how on that.
The Republican Party, as anyone knows, is the final bastion of the powerful white male reinforced by their white women. Somebody recently stated somewhere in the media that around 65 black people were counted at the Republican Convention. I don't know if this same fellow counted the Hispanic participants or the Asian participants, but in perusing the crowd when ever the cameras panned the audience while I was watching, I saw probably 98% white folks enraptured.
I'm white. I've been white all my life. I wouldn't say I'm proud to be white. I don't think pride has anything to do with it. You either accept what color your skin is or you don't. But when it comes to political parties, that's a bit different. I'd have a lousy chance at identifying a Republican from a Democrat walking around in a mall or in a bookstore, somewhere out in a mixed public setting... especially women. I honestly couldn't tell you if Sarah Palin was a Republican or a Democrat if she was walking around the streets of L.A..
To favor a black man for President over a white man for the same office is a radically new decision for most people in our country today. Add to that a woman for VP and a white candidate whose the oldest human being ever to run for President and this election has got to be the most unusual election, not only in this country, but possibly in the democratic world.
We all have our choices, don't we? I'd like to see Barack Obama become the next President of the U.S.A.. On the other hand, there are millions that would prefer to have McCain as the next President. There are quite possibly many voters that would love to have a woman VP. There are those that feel in these times that a military man would be the wisest pick for the office. Conversely, there are those that feel the country is in desperate need of a radical change of course and Obama is the only sound choice.
It all boils down to two parties, despite the divisions even within each party. One party or the other, Republican or Democrat, will become the next President of the United States. That is a given. There is no other choice. Yin or Yang : Black or White... Young or Old... A diplomatic approach or a Commander-in-Chief approach to our future... A calm, cool and collected person or a person that is known for his quick anger... the very real possibility of a strongly fundamentalist-influenced woman as President or a man that takes a more logical and rational approach to things.
My vote will not bring about the election of either side. Neither will yours or his and not even hers. Any vote is but a drop in the pitcher labeled either Republican or Democrat. But each of our drops add to the fullness of the pitcher. In the end count the pitcher with the most water is the one that is poured into the public's glasses to put an end to the American thirst for another four years. There will always be those that shun the offering and those that will drink heavily of the waters with the majority somewhere in the middle, returning to their normal lives waiting for the promised changes that were offered by the winning candidate, hopeful that their country will once again survive the madness of an overblown, over-priced, over-the-top campaign circus and get back to the business of living... maybe, just maybe, this time with a restored confidence in our government to work for all Americans and not just anonymous corporations.
