"Hunched Over Backwards to Beat A Trashcan"

Post by izeveryboyin » May 9th, 2005, 4:24 pm

Recently, the "Taste of Chaos" tour was here in town, playing at the Aragon Theater. Scenesters (http://studioeight.tv/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=3057) In dirty jeans lined up outside hours before the show, while angry youngsters from the neighborhood threw pennies at them and laughed from the Lawrence stop on the RedLine. The picked at their piercings and waited for bands like "My Chemical Romance", their dirty pals "The Used", "KillSwitch Engage" and lots of other crappy teen emo bands who whine about their curfew (at age 27?) and their girlfriend's disease (from fucking them?). Image Now the "Warped Tour" is on it's way to town. Bands like "Taking Back Sunday", "Coheed and Cambria" "Atreyu", and "The Academy Is..." will be blowing eardrums out at Chicago's "Tweeter Center" July 28th, and hundreds of thousands of weening little mini-van brats with red eyeliner'll line the walls awaiting tickets. Bloodying themselves in trecherous mosh pits: Image
and hunched over backwards to beat a trashcan, trying to become the night's big star. What is it with these punked out emo freaks? What is it with these tragic angst balls of teen depression? What is it with this shit? I know you've seen it, I know you've heard the crowds, and the humming of the bodies as they pile up, one against the other in a frenzy to get nowhere. What is it with this empty?
The concerts that I've been to usually include sullen faced jazz muscians blowing their horns: Image Or old, immigrant fiddlers giving concerts on the street: Image

or occasionally 34-year-old ex-lapdancers named Peaches who parade around stage in their old stripper's costume: Image

but mostly, I stay away from concerts. When there is a rock band I like, I stay away for fear of this guy: Image or his weird, loopy counterparts. These are the kids who need to be warned not to smoke in the boy's room (me), or to wash up in the morning because they haven't in three days. The ones whose messy, bed-ridden hairstyles are somewhere between loony bin, and fashion core, and no one is brave enough to say which one it is. Someone, someone please tell where this phenomenon came from, tell me where to send it back to, and bring me a vodka while you're at it.

in the 1970s...

why did i wear eye makeup to school? bowie, reed, and bolan did, therefore i was being cool, plus it pissed off my parents

why did i keep my dreadlocks (by accident, through poor hygiene)? marley and tosh did, therefore i was being cool, plus it pissed off my parents

why did i put cigarettes out in my arms? sid vicious did, therefore i was being cool, plus i was drunk

why did i poke safety pins through my earlobes? sid vicious and others did, therefore i was being cool, plus it pissed off my parents

i don't know...there seems to be common denominators...basically it comes down to trying to be cool, and sometimes the effects of mind-altering substances...only thing recurring is that this happens throughout history, i think, although the intensity may ebb and flow

she writes about it exuding her old age persona tho, already getting straight, I can smell it coming, yup, yet somewhere down there is a suspicion that all these kids will become conformist to a certain extent, and yet will hopefully have an innate ability to plumb the depths, to go within, the "why" of such adolescant displays.....

somedy when i am old and decrepid, i'll look like willy nelson, too.
