US rejecting aid?

My foreign exchange student is visiting from Germany this month and she tells me that the headlines in Germany are that the US is rejecting aid from them? The story says that it's because the US does not want to be pictured taking help from other countries, although the reason given to them by the US was that it was too infectious an area for them to risk being in? WHa?
Does anyone know about this? They are calling all this "Katrinagate" in Germany, and very offended that we are rejecting their help......

My exchange student daughter also points out that we have no international news going right now on tv here, and she wonders why? Apparently there has been a flood in France that has displaced 10, 000 people! I don't see it anywhere on the news.....

I'm confused.
I don't like the sound of this
Oh and I"m angry too, but hey, i'm angry all the time these days as most of you know.....

"German Plane With Katrina Aid Turned Back

By CLAUDIA KEMMER, Associated Press Writer

BERLIN - A German military plane carrying 15 tons of military rations for survivors of Hurricane Katrina was sent back by U.S. authorities, officials said Saturday.

The plane was turned away Thursday because it did not have the required authorization, a German government spokesman said.

The spokesman, speaking on customary condition of anonymity, declined to comment on a report in the German news magazine Der Spiegel that U.S. authorities refused the delivery on the grounds that the
NATOmilitary rations could carry mad cow disease.

The spokesman said U.S. authorities had since given approval for future aid flights, but it was unclear whether the German military would try again to deliver the rations.

Since Hurricane Katrina struck the United States, many international donors have complained of frustration that bureaucratic entanglements have hindered shipments to the United States.

A U.S. Embassy official, who agreed to discuss the matter only if not quoted by name, blamed the German flight's rejection on temporary technical and logistical problems that have accompanied recovery operations in the devastated region.

German military planes have flown several loads of rations to the Gulf Coast. Berlin is also sending teams equipped with high-capacity pumps to help clear floodwaters."

My gut says that bushco doesn't want other countries to see how badly they bungled this disaster up right here at home.
They are in cover up mode as usual.

Not exactly related but I heard someone say on NPR that the first help that arrived after the storm was a bunch of Canadian Mounties from Vancouver. This was five days after the storm.

I am pretty hopeless about the american public, I keep thinking that they will not get fooled again. But I am doubtful. Karen Hughes was sworn in as the Ambassador of Public Relations. What does that job entail I wonder. Somehow they will make this into another 9/11 I suppose.
