i'm not going to link to the myriad articles that toute the idea of not rebuilding the big easy, because theyre big and easy enough to find for yourself.

what i'm going to say is this: if nola is allowed to perish, then you can be damn sure that it will do so to the benefit of the religious right, who will for generations, perhaps longer (if they manage to keep us alive for more than a few more generations) use nola as an example of God bringing hellfire to bear upon the wickedness of western sins, excess, madness and fun.

do not mistake this for missing the point that nola is really simply a city of poor christian folk just trying to make their way. i understand that. you understand that. but americans are stupid and our leaders are vultures and if nola is allowed to die, trust me that it will become, in american right-wing-nut religious lexicon, the western version of sodom. i am not kidding and i am very serious.

there is work to be done.

I agree. Let's bring it back, at least most of it. There is too much to lose.

The levees, they are the problem to begin with.

Coastal restoration of wetlands and barrier islands. The levees are channeling all the aluvial soil out to sea. Stop the development.
Put gates in the levees like dams so the soil can build up the marshes. Check it out firsty. Do your homework. Small scale experiments are working. But no money to do it on a grand scale.
