I challenge you to name a better front-man for a band, who only sang (didn't play any instrument). With the exception of Mick Jagger (who actually played some guitar and harmonica) (and possibly Robert Plant) it cannot be done.

Come on! The whisky-tinged voice, the karate moves, the samurai swords, the jump suits, the "Tao of Dave." Yeah!

What, you think you know someone who was better? Lay it on me baby.

oh you poor bastard.

(in no particular order, i simply scrolled thru my itunes library looking for bands and this is who i came up with, and this is from someone who thinks that van halen with dlr was the best pure party band of all time)

1. plant

2. ozzy

3. daltrey

4. freddie mercury

5. steven tyler

6. chris robinson

7. joey ramone

8. jim morrison

9. axel rose
and knowing i'm so eager to fight cant make letting me in any easier.

1. already mentioned plant as a possiblity.

2. are you kidding me? he's a cartoon character. he's had about three good songs.

3. he approaches dlr, but fails to surpass him.

4. nice call, but no.

5. you have to be kidding. he's nothing more than jagger-lite. the best thing he ever created was liv.

6. who's the one smoking the wacky weed here? chris-fucking-robinson. didn't they have like two songs?

7. didn't he play guitar?

8. two words. over rated.

9. i said a better front-man. you think he was better? again, they only put out about three albums/discs. did have dlr's charisma? methinks not.

nice try pal. go back to the drawing board.

how many albums did dlr make with van halen? we're talking volume here or what? ozzy leading black sabbath was the catalyst for modern hard rock. who was a more compelling figure onstage? dlr kicking in his spandex or ozzie eating bats? without daltrey, there would be no roth. if anything, daltrey is the closest thing to roth, because all the others i mentioned were at least songwriters as well. steven tyler is dlr on coke (a good thing for a lead singer). freddie mercury is vastly underrated and knew better than anyone how to whip up a crowd. the black crowes, i admit, are a band that i am partial to, but they released several albums and kicked ass live. joey ramone didnt play guitar. dont let the myth of morrison kill the reality. axel rose definitely had charisma. now he's fat and worthless, but he was great.

the fact that i came up with 9 in 2 minutes, from my playlist alone, destroys any credibility you thought you had. go have another shot and listen to "dancing in the streets" again. the 80s are over.

hey, i'll give yoiu credit. you did a nice job.

if i was grading on effort, you would get a solid B+.

but you failed to name one that surpasses dlr. why? because for a front-man, jagger is the greatest of all time. best that ever was. best that ever will be. in second place is dlr. yes, some may come close, but for a pure front-man, with the exception of jagger, all others fall by the wayside.

you see, firsty, i been to the edge. there i stood and looked down. you know i lost a lot of friends there firsty, i got no time to mess around.

you shoulda jumped. plant is the best of all time. then jagger, then who cares. i didnt even mention bono because 1. he sucks and 2. i hate U2. but a case could be made. a case could be made for any number of punk or metal bands as well. dlr brought theatrics and nothing else. he couldnt write a postcard. i love dlr, i really do. but his is too limited a talent to surpass that belonging to real bands with real songs and real impact. and everything roth did was a byproduct of the theatrics that came before him in the 70s anyway, so he's too derivative to even take full credit for that which he was genuinely great at.

blondie, henry rollins, eminem, janis joplin, etc.

i mean, seriously.

oh, my misguided friend, where do i begin?

yeah, i love plant, but better than jagger? ease up on the crack pipe. no freakin' way. no way. not even close. i worship at the alter of the glimmer twins.

agreed on bono. u2 blows.

vh began in the mid 70s. yeah, diamond dave's lyrics maybe weren't the best, ahem. but vh really redefined rock n roll. you can say what you want about hendrix, but eddie truly took the guitar to a new level and he (and dlr) were the template for rock that nearly every rock band copied for 20 years. so i disagree that they were derivative, but for the fact that all music is derivative. i think it was muddy waters who said "shit, we're all just doing what mozart did a few years back." or something like that.

blondie? rollins? em-in-fuckin-em? you are the one who can't be serious.

are we including lead singers who can actually play an instrument now? because my list has to change in that case.

except for ian anderson. there is no such thing as a rock flute.

no lead singers who play instruments.

ian anderson? wait a minute. i had to spit some bile out. that's better.

i will give anderson credit, however, for coming up with one kick-ass lyric from, i think, aqualung: snot is running down his nose! if i never hear that song again, it will be too soon.
