Viva Castro
Viva Castro
This just in . . .
Fidel Castro is undergoing internal surgery and so has transferred power temporarily to his brother, Defense Minister Raoul. After the break we will turn to a parade in Miami where people are dancing for joy in the streets . . . .
Stay tuned to CNN, the Capitalist News Network.

I don't think 'Therefore, I am.' Therefore, I am.
an interview with a Cuban politician on Fidel's condition."notwithstanding his very healthy reality"
an excellent bit of (totaly sincere) propaganda.
an excerpt:
"AMY GOODMAN: What is the surgery he underwent, and what is wrong with Fidel Castro?
RICARDO ALARCON: Well, what is wrong with Fidel Castro is that he really works a lot. He has been working his entire life. He's not a head of state that is available only for a few photo opportunities and some ceremonies, and so he really takes his responsibilities and his duties as a mission. That's why he, apart from being substituted provisionally according to the constitution as the head of state, as the head of the power and so on, he also had to designate certain comrades for specific programs, on healthcare area, on education, on energy and so on, programs that he was conducting personally. He is a very rare head of state. He's a head of state that works and works very, very much.
And, of course, if you travel, you go to the eastern Cuba and make two speeches in the same day and have many meetings and so on -- notwithstanding his very healthy reality -- things happen, and at some point he suffered a sort of crisis that probably was most created by the stress and the excessive effort that his body was making. And that's it."

no doubt he's a man with a lot of energy. I saw a Birri film/video last summer and in them a cuban mid/aged woman said when someone asked her "what will happen with Cuba when Castro die (no este mas)" in a way that really moved me more or less this: "that won't happen... yes, it can happen but I can't think about it...Castro will be forever with us". Such devotion for a political leader is science fiction for me, and at some point it amazes me.

Remember those times when the CIA tried to kill him what with exploding cigars and joybuzzers and whoopie cushions.

I get the flip side in Tampa
meet a number of anti-Castro Cubanos
as for me?
I say to them
"anybody who wants to be pres for 50 years is half=crazy"
and
"he needa a long vacation"
but if I mentioned a favorable idea,
they'd go bezerk, loco.
He has a stern fear that the capitalist carpetbaggers would invade and return Cuba's spoils to their dominion
an he don't want that
Hopefully the South American evolution will continue and Cuba can evolve with them, a progressve democratic movement. Til then, Cuba will maintain a definate detachment from the capitalists, namely, the USofA and the world bunk
But my Tampa amigos don't like him at all/ He ain't Catholic
He is authoritarian, no doubt, but with his purpose,
the dictatorship of the proletariat.

The dictator, widely believed to be (at the very least) one of the cruelest in the Americas, has gone to a private abode for much needed rest and recovery. Only those closest to him, and the press loyal and dedicated to gov't propaganda, receive carefully guarded information on his physical and mental state.
Meanwhile, protestors in the United States and elsewhere are calling for his resignation. They are demanding that democracy be restored to the country through peaceful regime change, in truly free and fair elections. They are demanding that their civil and human rights be respected, which given the dictator's terrible record in this regard, is an important political issue.
But enough about President Bush. Let's hear what is happening with Fidel Castro . . . .

Arcadia, I have read the last Paginas you posted, about Sandra Russo's memories of Cuba, I read it straight through, not bothering to stop and translate the words I didn't know, and I got a good sense of what she meant, the time spent in the "new province", Bahía Blanca, La Nueva Provincia, the interactions with the people, the limits yet freedoms they enjoy.
Am reading my Spanish for Idiots, Español para Idiotas, and am gonna read the stuff as i learn more, in a natural fashion, again
muy bien gracias para Las Paginas!
