NOT FORGETTING NEW ORLEANS ( Rebecca Solnit)

Along with the hideous war ( 3,217 and counting soldiers dead on "our" side . . . hundreds of thousands of Iraqis), a mendacious and politcally-scheming Attorney General ( the country's highest law-enforcement officer) many, many scandals, torture ( defended by the administration) and as many other outrages as you can recall in recent memory, the Bush administration badly flubbed in New Orleans.

I haven't forgotten. For all of our advancements, it seems we really haven't come that far. What if we take over the world? What if we corner the market? What then? We hardly know how to treat ourselves with basic respect and compassion, let alone "others".
