the turn of the year
rebirth of the sun
raise your cup to the oak
toast the season begun
the valley is crossed
the calendar fled
the Holly King fading
-let's drink him to bed
the season of sleep
now covers the land;
the music of spheres
cares not for our plans,
so-
cast your fate to the fire
toast the Yuletide begun
raise your cup to the Lady
and the faraway sun.

I've been eating and drinking straight through
since Thanksgiving, how about you?
If I continue through Christmas and New Years,
there will be a heavy price to pay!
I'm bound to gain 20 pounds, at least,
which will require me to buy larger sized jeans.
Oh my God, I'm going to get fat!
Lord help me. Let us pray.
I can't have that!
When someone asks me what I want for a gift,
I tell them, "Nuttin."
Because I've already had too much, apparently,
evidenced by my being a glutton.

a stolen holiday
the night was shorter
but he didn't notice
the missing few seconds
he remembered pagan sounds
the cop-show screech of tires
as the sun turns a corner
even plants notice and lean
be quiet and listen
ear to the earth
what you hear is not the
crash of blood against a membrane
it is the sound of a promise whispered

I celebrated the theft of a day
by the gift of another.
A perfect way to
confront the remembrance
of a disappeared year.
And when the multi-colored
lights are clear upon the next
cliche horizon, I embrace
the occasion with a northern
prayer ...
I listen to the silence of
snow fallen so deep, I sink
in it,
like I sunk into the heart of
God when he claimed he didn't
exist and invited me
to join him
to prove
We do.

I pepper blacked my eye
on Rosemary's thyme
stirring up soup
to crack the winter blues.

`Do you know, I was so angry, Kitty,' Alice went on...`when I saw all the mischief you had been doing, I was very nearly opening the window, and putting you out into the snow! And you'd have deserved it, you
