Today's banner, compliments of panta rhei...
She sent me a photo from her trip to paris
I tried to get the sign on the wall in the back of the sleepers to show up on the banner because it says "des idees" and that's what it's all about, right? des idees......
Thank you, panta, for sleeping in public for us and for the great photo you provided!

ahh, doreen -
feels great to hover above the words and vibes of studio8, even if in sleeping mode!
thanks so much.
this pic was taken in '86 during my frist trip t o paris with some friends. we didn't have the money for a hostel or something, so spent our nights on pieces of cardboard on front of gare du nord (no sleeping bags.... all we took with us for that trip was a toothbrush and some francs in our pockets).
in the early mornings, the street-cleaners would chase us away with their huge water hoses....
the arrow isn't pointing to me, though, but to my sleeping friend... i'm the one to the right of her, with my feet inside that brown plastic bag, which kept the cool night wind away from my ankles.
even though it was summer, the nights were pretty chilly down to the ground....
thanks again for putting me on air, doreen!

what a wonderfully organised site this is! I was about to post a question to find out who created the banner art, the mast head, if you will, and it's already been posted.
Well slap me purple and call me Shirley! It's a really nice image. Two figures relaxed enough to just crash out on the floor. The figures must have been completly shattered too because they are strewn across the floor as if they just slept where they fell.
I also love the way the green (is it a window?) plays against the red at the right hand side.

Panta, sorry, I screwed up the arrow... I thought those looked like YOUR legs! I'll fix it and put it back up later on... It really is a cool pic...
Bennie - you're a sweetheart! Organized? here? Ha! lol... I've got files all over the place... I can't keep up! I'm going to do one with one of your subway shots soon... thanks for letting me!
Dave the Dov - Thanks for the second photo you sent of the lake... here's what I came up with....
New banner courtesy of Dave the Dov's photo contribution which I brought into photoshop and turned into this banner... Thank you, Dave!

I created this new banner using a photograph of Bennie's. Thank you so much, Bennie! Your train is now the Studio Eight train! You're either on the train or off the train.
The quote comes from Lawrence Ferlinghetti's poem, The Long Street, from his book, A Coney Island of the Mind. I used to perform this piece years ago. I love it!
The Long Street by Lawrence Ferlinghetti
The long street
which is the street of the world
passes around the world
filled with all the people of the world
not to mention all the voices
of all the people
that ever existed
Lovers and weepers
virgins and sleepers
spaghetti salesmen and sandwichmen
milkmen and orators
bonelss bankers
brittle housewives
sheathed in nylon snobberies
deserts of advertising men
herds of high school fillies
crowds of collegians
all talking and talking
and walking around
or hanging out windows
to see what's doing
out in the world
where everything happens
sooner or later
if it happens at all
And the long street
which is the longest street
in all the world
but which isn't as long
as it seems
passes on
thru all the cities and all the scenes
down every alley
up every boulevard
thru every crossroads
thru red lights and green lights
cities in sunlight
continents in rain
hungry Hong Kongs
untillable Tuscaloosas
Oaklands of the soul
Dublands of the imagination
And the long street
rolls on around
like an enormous choochoo train
chugging around the world
with its bawling passengers
and babies and picnic baskets
and cats and dogs
and all of them wondering
just who is up
in the cab ahead
driving the train
if anybody
the train which runs around the world
like a world going round
all of them wondering
just what is up
if anything
and some of them leaning out
and peering ahead
and trying to catch
a look at the driver
in his one-eye cab
trying to see him
to glimpse his fave
to catch his eye
as they whirl around a bend
but they never do
although once in a while
it looks as if
they're going to
And the street goes bowling on
with its windows reaching up
its windows the windows
of all the buildings
in all the streets of the world
bowling along
thru the light of the world
thru the night of the world
with landerns at crossings
lost lights flashing
crowds at carnivals
nightwood circuses
whorehouses and parliaments
forgotten fountains
cellar doors and unfound doors
figures in lamplight
pale idols dancing
as the world rocks on
But now we come
to the lonely part of the street
that goes around
the lonely part of teh world
And this is not the place
that you change trains
for the Brighton Beach Express
This is not the place
that you do anything
This is the part of teh world
where nothing's doing
where no one's doing
anything
where nobody's anywhere
nobody nowhere
except yourself
not even a mirror
to make you two
not a soul
except your own
maybe
and even that
not there
maybe
or not yours
maybe
because you're what's called
dead
you've reached your station.
Descend

Hey yeah!
That's fucking great. I love my train logo. I hope you got permission from Scottish Public Transport to ammend their logo?
I like that quote too. You have reached your station. descend. descend. descend...
I feel proud to have contributed to the site in such a way. I feel as if a ten tonne truck had killed the both of us...
in case you're not a Smiths fan, I just mean: "the pleasure and the privilege is mine."

Thanks, Bennie! I'm going to do more with your photos if you don't mind.
This one I just put back up is from a photo I took at Virginia Beach. That place is paradise! I live in Virginia and had never been there until last year. I'm going back this year. I loved it! I took loads of photos when I was there, some of which are still on the darn camera!

I like this one. I like the twisted gnarled roots. There's something very sad, and yet, very beautiful about a tree lying, dead, on it's side.
Even the power and strength of a tree is nothing when confronted with Mother Nature. It's kind of a metaphor for recent natural occurences in South East Asia.
Alicia - ellipsis - sent me a mail once where she talked about the aftermath of the hurricanes in her part of America a few months ago. She told me how she finds all the uprooted trees to be really beautiful. I totally agree. There is a definite beauty in destruction. And then, when the trees were chopped up at the side of the roads ready to be taken away they were still beautiful.
She wrote: "the trees are arranged in cute little slices by the street" and she thinks she isn't a good writer.
Anyway, I like the new mast head.
