I'm honest to a fault.
My most vile sin, my most
despicable trait.
But without honesty,
honestly, how would we
follow our fate?

How would we know what is real or a show?
I cannot cease or even temporarily halt
this inability to lie. Believe me I have tried.
Sometimes a little white lie, they say
is better since it saves the day and keeps
others from being unduly insulted or hurt.
But I have been known, unfortunately,
to be direct and sometimes curt.
A habit like this is hard to break,
but I work very hard to be kind.
Believe me when I tell you there
are battles in my mind.

"Would you let me know if my zipper was down?
Would you let me know if I'm acting a clown?"
I've been asked these questions before.
My answer has always been "Sure."

Honesty in friendship and love is certainly the optimal way
And yet, I fret, and wring my hands not knowing
what to say. Since sometimes, honestly, I'm afraid
my perception may be askew.
But whatever I say I mean at the time,
no matter how altered or damaged my mind,
it's certainly open to speaking the truth.

I'm honest like a child.
Open to all wild and crazy possibility.
And always, I hope, others I know
will be true to their maximum ability.
