Another epidose of bot infiltration - Can anyone help?

We've been inundated with bots again lately. And this batch is not only registering (which I hoped we could stop with the recently installed visual registration process), but also posting. Ugh. We're not here to promote the sale of pharmaceuticals or share links to porn sites. It's upsetting. These little buggers are so sophisticated. How does someone write a program to register and post links on discussion forums like this anyway? Better question is WHY? They certainly can't be getting much business from it.

Anyway, I need to upgrade the software again. Anybody out there know about phpBB software and want to help with the upgrade?
