Art Jam idea

Post by Doreen Peri » January 15th, 2007, 10:47 pm

I was inspired by a recent local event (I didn't attend but heard about it via email) where different artists spend a short time drawing the same person. http://4traits.com/

Pretty cool! Looking forward to attending one of their shows in the future!

But hearing about this inspired me. I thought why don't we do something like this online?

How many of you have either a scanner or a digital camera? Either one would work.

Maybe we could have a Portrait Art Jam. We could start off a thread with a photo of a person... someone we know... even of ourselves.... photos which belong to you.

Then participants could draw or paint or otherwise create a likeness of the portrait artistically, then post their images in the thread following the portrait photo.

What do you think? Would this be fun or what?

I love the idea!

The 4traits people have a time limitation because it's a live event.. something like 10 minutes per pose for each drawing... but we could do this for a week or even a month... so everybody would have a chance to draw the portraits and either scan or take photos of their work and post it.

OR... it doesn't have to be portraits... just got inspired by what others are doing.

We could do this with any theme at all.

Whatchya say artist people? Hmmm?

i saw a 3trait competition televised. Wonderful.

i think it's a great idea.
my stick figures along with kurt's symbolic glyphs added to swirls of dor colours or anemone's rock 'n roll renderings. Norman's softness and Jim's pencil and guache precision. (am i labelling? see? it's five a.m. and i'm throwing words out like an impressionist's garbage can)

i'm for the idea.

maybe doing it for one or two days as the actual jam, and then leaving the threads / forum open for slower contributors, and for those who weren#t able to attend during the jammy thing?

How about a "Portrait of Love Art Jam" for one week surrounding Valentine's Day.

A week long art jam will give people a chance to draw, paint, and either scan or take a photo of and upload their work.

Threads will start with a portrait photo of someone you love. Faces. Headshots. It could be you. ;) Self love is a good thing after all. Or a photo of your loved one(s) face.

Then artists will reply to that thread with their drawing or painting rendition of the photo.

If people want to reply in poetry, they could write a poem which represents the portrait they are viewing.

Or should we just limit it to the artwork?

Anyway, what do you all think of the theme and timing?

Any additional ideas welcome.

i think it's inevitable that words will fall out of our mouths when we view the original thread portrait.
words and art - yes.
Week around valentine's - yes
theme - yes.

Just stopped by to say that I just LOVE this jam!

I just love it! I do! ;)

Should we expand it to more than portraits? Other things we love? Places we love? Just an idea.

After all, a favorite spot in the mountains or at the ocean can be a portrait of love, no?

Or should we wait until another jam and just keep this one for the literal definition of portraits?

Do you love this as much as I love it? (Oh and also, I LOVE you all! heh... made-up valentine holiday or not... I'd love ya anyway!)

thank you so much for participating and for your inspiring talents & energies!

i love it too
and i think it's especially endearing because of the central portrait theme.

look at mousey's mom, eleanor (from the poem)
your daughter
ourselves

let's keep it centred and remember how much joy comes from uploading images and playing.

(right now, i'm looking at flickr toys for playing with images - it's a blast

gosh...i'm glad i returned just in time for this jam! ( my problem is always a balancing act, either i post too much or i don't post at all.)

i wanted to thank you again Dor for this space and this incredible experience.

i too, want this to last awhile...there are others, judih's sons and Arcadia's boy for instance, that i want to draw, but time slips and matters matter so if you please...i am all for extensions!
Freedom's just another word...

I extended it a week so it won't be over today but next Sunday instead.

Glad you're all enjoying it! I am, too!

It's good seeing you, SooZ!

You can never post too much!

Maybe later we'll make this a regular feature...

Yes, it's great fun! I am loving seeing everyone and seeing what spontaneous sketchings combust.

I'm happy you've extended it because a jam like this takes time and constraints of life don't always allow for immediate response.

Good stuff all!
I used to walk with my head in the clouds but I kept getting struck by lightning!
Now my head twitches and I drool alot. Anonymouse
