Last summer, the idea for an exhibit came to me after reading the “You Caught My Eye” personal ads in the Washington Post. With their attention to time, place, props, dialogue and even blocking, I began to see each of these ads as scenes from many different films. I was so attracted to this perception that I immediately visualized an exhibit filled with art inspired by these romantic attempts to reconnect with passing strangers.

The idea continued to include yet another component. What if a writer could then compose a second ad, written as though they had a personal encounter with a stranger near one of these newly created artworks? The art itself would then in fact become an actual prop that could be described in the second ad. Hmmmmm……………

“Cupidity” features 34 regional artists and writers, who all decided to help make this concept a reality. We are pleased to present such a creative exhibit to our collectors and the new visitors who will make their way into Bethesda for this unique valentine.
“Cupidity” is:
Albert Schweitzer / Katherine Thompson
Alexandra Silverthorne / Heidi Mordhorst
Anna U Davis / Susan Leonardi
Dana Ellyn Kaufman / Charlie Barnett
David Wallace / Mary Kay Zuravleff
Ed Bisese / Levi Asher
Elaine Langerman / Caryn Thurman
Glenn Friedel / Patrick Holway
Greg Ferrand / R R Angell
Helga Thomson / Rebecca Pope
Jean Beebe / Dennis Greza
Kim Bentley / Katie McCaskey
Kirk Waldroff / Dorian Hamilton
Matt Sesow / Doreen Peri
Mike Janis / Claudia Rousseau
Scott Brooks / Frank Warren
Warren Craghead / Roger Noyes

I was the writer matched up with Matt Sesow for this project.

Here is the original "I saw you" ad which inspired Matt's painting

Original ad as printed in the "City Paper", Washington DC-
You and Max were playing in the dog park at Columbia and Kalorama Friday around 6 p.m. I was there with Emma. You're a doll. Would love to set up a play date. When: Friday, September 30, 2005. Where: Dog Park, Columbia and Kaiorama. You: Man. Me: Woman. #901065

Here is Matt's painting.

Here is the writing I came up with inspired by Matt's painting.

Spied you at the Kennel Club near the hydrant. Fact is I dug your pug. That old cur Max made eyes at my mutt. Her fur got ruffled by his bow wow but I got a dilemma. My bitch Emma was on the ball, caught your mongrel's call but I missed your name. Tossin' a bone your way. Be a hound and sniff me out. Fetch my heat. My tongue's sweatin'. Ya can't keep me on a leather leash. Gotta run free. But take the lead and I'll heel. I won't beg but could be your pet. My nose is wet. Betchyer tail is curled. What's your stud fee? Get yer dander up, canine, and bark at me by email. I'll bite.

Columbia and Kalorama
Adams Morgan neighborhood?
I lived there in 1974. People would ask me if I had a death wish. I suppose it is different now. I sure wish I could click my heels together and be there. Good luck, don't break a leg.

There's a great club there called "Madams Organ" ... never been to it but want to go soon
http://www.madamsorgan.com/

Two litkickers are also participating in this show ...not the poetry reading i guess 'cause i haven't heard back from them... but as writers/collaborators with the artists.

Here's the flyer for the poetry event. Wish you could be there, too, STill!

I'm back!

It was very cool!

30+ chairs filled, standing room only...

I'd say there were anywhere between 40-50 people there in a very small room

A full house... an hour and a half and hardly a yawn in the crowd

;)

One of the best poetry readings I've ever attended.

LOTS of talent in that room and we kept it moving, 3-5 minutes through the readers 2 times..

a little bit of music, too

A great night all the way around... photos later ( i hope... not sure if my camera worked ok.. we'll see)

I'm still hyped from it

Next stop? Cabaradio.... (well, there may be a few stops in between given the fact that cabaradio isn't until this summer)

.....

and thanks, Judih... i read the doggy piece.. got a few good laughs out of it ;)
