overhearing things

There are occasions when I overhear people talking.
Some of these occasions are occasions where I happen to have a pen and pad of paper handy.
One night, while drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes at Denny's, a horrid family came and sat near my table. They were horrid because they were apallingly rude and generally repulsive.
But I hear, at one moment, as this woman is wrestling a newspaper from her 20-something son, she croaks
"Give me the comics page. I paid for part of that newspaper."
I'm not lying, or even exagerating
