I've heard a variation that goes something like this:

A young friar joins an order that imposes a strict vow of silence, allowing him to speak privately with the abbot only once a year. After the first year, the abbot visits him in his cell. "Father, I wonder if I might have another blanket? This one has grown worn and thin." The abbot nods and leaves.

Another year passes. "Father, would it be possible to get a pair of work gloves? My hands are blistered from toiling in the garden all day." The abbot says he'll see what he can do.

But by the third year, the friar has begun to wonder if this is really the path he was meant to follow, and on the day he's allowed to speak, he confides his doubts to the abbot. "Father, I don't think this is the life for me, and I would like your permission to leave the order."

"I'm not surprised, my son," the abbot sighs. "You've done nothing but complain since you got here."
