No laughing matter

The monthly "Anti Gravity" column in Scientific American offers a light-hearted look at some of the more arcane whimsy from the world of science. (Such as a recent article detailing breaking news from the forefront of flatulence research.)

However I was surprised by the somber tone of this month's column, and in light of some ongoing discussions in other S8 salons, I thought it appropriate to attach it here. You may need to click on the image twice to enlarge it enough to read.

excellent article
very frightening this move to ignore science
it's the dumb-ing down of America
captured beautifully ( and comically)
in the movie "Idiocracy" with Luke Owens and Maya Rudolph

And also in a dark & bitingly satirical sci-fi story by C.M. Kornbluth titled "The Marching Morons", depicting a world where concerns about overpopulation were discouraging the more highly educated people from having children, while the less gifted caste alluded to in the title continued breeding apace. Might have provided the core idea for Woody Allen's "Sleeper".
