Mengwe or Massawomeck as the Chesapeake Bay Algonquians called these Iroquoian raiders from the north.

No doubt there was trade as welll as war between Northern Iroquoian groups and their southern kin the Meherrin,Cheroenhaka and Tuscarora who had villages in Virginia. Relations between these Iroquoians and their Algonquian or even eastern Siouan neighbors such as the Monacans or Catawbas were less cordial.

There are still Iroquoian Cheroenhaka(Nottoway) living in Virginia.
