snake oil and patent medicine have been hawked for a long time...
once saw an old (1910s? 1920s?) ad for some miracle cure that loudly proclaimed "contains no foolium!"
my brother & I stole that as a tagline for quite a while afterward. "Well, at least it contains no foolium" or "How much foolium does it contain?"
