A week or so ago the dog & I were just wrapping up a rail-trail walk alongside Scott Brook. Just as we reached the car I noticed a huge stand of sulfur shelf fungus a short way off in the woods. We were barely a mile from home - so I drove there, dropped off the dog, grabbed a storage bag, & returned. It took a little clambering to reach the tree from which the fungus was sprouting, but I harvested enough for two dinners (noshing while I picked), and would have collected more if I'd been sure they'd last for 3 days in the fridge. They were so fresh they still had a moist creamy texture and a faintly acidic flavor note. Awesome & unexpected gift from the forest spirits!
