a photograph and interpretation

Post by bohonato » September 16th, 2007, 11:57 pm

I've always been fascinated with interpretations, and in particular the thought that the artist's intent is meaningless, but rather that individual interpretations are what's important.

I took this photograph on the Fourth of August, 2007

Today a friend of mine commented that "I really like that photo of the crumbling brick building. It looks like the new one is growing out of it."

I just happen to have an obsession with old building falling into disrepair and the People Mover. I certainly wasn't paying attention to that building in the background. I didn't mean for this photo to be saying anything, actually. I just liked it.

But, after my friend commented on that, I immediately thought of the official motto of Detroit:

Speramus Meliora; Resurget Cineribus

We Hope for Better Things; It Shall Rise From The Ashes

cineribus...cineribus... do I have to search in the VOX latin-spanish dictionary?

I like your friend´s interpretation!

more urban desolation renewal scenes
interesting composition
the verticals of the dark tree shadow and black light-poles
the horizontal bridge with vertical supporting stand,
the textured brick wall, expansive like a blank page with its withering crumbling top
the grassy plane at the base
and the mosaic of upward reaching window columns
into a gray sky softened by zen-like green leaves
harnessing the spacial pondering
the small world of cars and people down below,
mere accents in a greater scheme
i'm on a survival mission
yo ho ho an a bottle of rum om
