do you like this photograph?

Post by SmileGRL » July 30th, 2009, 4:41 pm

do you like this photo? yes or no and why.

it looks a little blurry and grainy here, not sure why (probably the upload resizing). just imagine it clear and in focus. i'm more interested in if you like the composition, subject, colors, etc.

since you're only offering two choices, i'll have to answer 'no' because the composition is not pleasant to my eye. the colors of the chairs - very good... the dolls (?) in the front chair - hmmmm... the lopsidedness of the overall picture (the left side shows this) - uncomforable... too many 'half-figures' in the background for my tastes.

i'd like to see a crop job with this pic... emphasis on the dolls in the chair, maybe..?

thanks cecil. i appreciate your comments.

here's my take on this picture (and i apologize again for the quality of this upload/download).

it's weird how i fall in love with lopsided, uncropped, almost disturbing images these days (like naked dolls randomly left in public, yet in your face), where you also have contrast on different levels...like still life contrasting with real life (in this case, in the background but disappearing from the picture because it is not important. but you still acknowledge it instead of cropping it out...because if it's just the chairs and the dolls, it looks staged. but if you allow the camera to "catch" a little reality by the ankles so to speak, it makes you think about the beauty of a find like this on a real beach...girls were playing there a few minutes ago...it's that "wow! i can't believe i'm seeing this here" moment that i wanted to capture...the contrast between a little drama on a beach chair and life goes on), & the contrasting textures of shiny smooth wet beach and rough sand all grading from powder white in one corner to dirty creamy mud to shiny silver and finally a corner of green blue ocean. i kinda like pictures like these because they're not perfect and they're not faked. i understand that most people won't like it though. and that's okay. i just thought i'd share my thoughts behind this picture with you too.

okay...here's another example of not perfect, but i love it. we were walking through an outdoor shopping mall where you exit universal studios last year, and i looked up and saw this billboard. so instead of focusing just on that, i zoomed out and "blocked" it uncentered in reality...lots of colors and textures and unfinished words and images. if i did crop this picture, i'd cut a couple of inches from the left, but that's all.

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/IG ... site"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_GujzL1vL7vE/SjAE- ... 6.JPG"></a>

okay, so instead of just yes or no...tell me your thoughts on these pictures. what you think or feel when you look at them...

The beach picture.....I like it! It doesn't look grainy at all.

I think it's funny, too. Naked baby butts on a beach chair. heh ... one of them trying to get a suntan where the sun don't shine. lol

.....

the billboard photo's really great!

I can't read all the text in her talk bubble but that sorta even makes it more intriguing. I can read OH ANDY and ... AGAIN! ...

that one would make a great studio eight banner but not sure I could get it cropped to fit the size properly.

I could change the headline to S.8. ANGST

haha

Hi, mj... I like your description of the picture more than the picture itself... ;) but I understand your concept and it is good.

The 2d picture is really good! I like the colors, the content, the way the couple of words stand out ... it may have a been a quick shot but you captured something maybe more than you thought..? I wouldn't crop this one at all.. fine as it is. I can feature it rather large, maybe like a 12x14 or even larger (with an off center matting..?) in plain white with a black core... metallic frame... some experimenting would be fun.

I really like the second photo, the composition guide your eye through the photo and allows the photo to hold your interest. In the beach photo the top people hurt the composition. Heres what I'd do with it.

I like the photo uncropped the way you posted it. I think it takes all those feet to balance out the central image.

I love the color of the ocean. I will never forget the first time I saw the pacific with my own eyes. the blue of it

best not to put much into my words
I just like the way the many feets kinds of frames the chairs and dolls like a crown.

Cecil forgot more about photography than I will probably ever know.

I liked both for different reasons!

first photo: well, my eyes did a sort of instant crop with a bit uncanny attraction-effect: maybe the blue & white of the sillas? (there are the last colors I would choose for a silla by the sea  ), the undressed, forgotten dolls? (from distance I thought in porcelain dolls...)

second foto: wow!!. Smooth to look at!: I liked the old-like carteles, the colors, the not present whole viñeta and the present text. And it made me smile!

gracias for sharing them with us, smile-girl! :)
