I don't' know jacks--t about haiku but even so I think your picture poem was very nice work

Thanks, Jack. I'm no expert or academic, but here's what I've learned by hanging around collectives populated by real artists who know their stuff...

Haiku: little word sketches that paint pictures with the fewest words possible. Classical haiku consists of 17 Japanese sound units in three lines of 5-7-5. No idea what constitutes a "sound unit", but anywhere from 10 to 15 English syllables contain 17 of them. I like 3-5-3 or 4-6-4 syllable structures, but anything goes.

Haiga: haiku accompanied by pictures, or vice-versa.

Senryu: haiku about human emotions or inner life, rather than the outer natural world

Tanka: A haiku followed by 2 more lines, often in the form of a question, & with the same number of sound units/syllables as the middle line of the 'ku.

Probably other forms, but you'll have to ask someone who really knows this stuff. I'm just an aging techie.

Haibun - a collection of haiku separated by lines of narrative text
