Mystery sub? Not any more.

Post by Sober Duck » September 23rd, 2005, 6:28 pm

Since WW2 a legend surfaced about a German U-Boat that was sunk in the shipping channel of the Chesapeake Bay. After it's sinking it was towed ashore to clear the channel. The wreckage was towed to the tip of Willoughby and left to decay and decay is just what it did.
After hearing this story all of my life I began to realize that there was no way it could be a U-Boat. And so I researched.

This photo is what is left of this vessel today.

The next photo is of my father standing on the same vessel in 1949.
Notice the angle of the deck and the angle of the remains in the top photo.

Now I believe that the identity of the vessel is a torpedo boat, the USS Stringham TB-19. Unfortunately I have not been able to confirm this but I am 99% sure that she is the Stringham.

This photo is of a Spanish American War era torpedo boat under construction. It looks quite simular to what my father is standing on.

If that was a U-boat there should be more of it there. Rather than just a little of it left. I would have to say that it's that second choice of yours is right. If that was a U-boat they would have pulled it out of the water so as to get a better look at it. Plus to see what advantages they could have gain off of it as well.

I used to see an old Japanese sub sticking out of the water along the coast of Vietnam between Phan Thiet and CamRanh, can't remember exactly, think it was just a bit south of CamRanh.....
They were allies of the Vichy French, and so how the Japanese run the place for a short while, duh, until HoChiMinh and the VietMinh run them off, as allies of the USA, until after the war, when Truman said "nyet" and the rest is history. Old sub, rusted, almost home. Forget about it.
It don't look like much is left of your U-boat. Looks like it made a U-turn, mm mhaahaa.
