Beautiful pictures... beautiful place to live. If only pictures could pass on the smell... I can only imagine how fresh it all is.

How long have you lived in the BF?

cecil - i've lived close to the black forest almost all my life, with some exceptions of a few years... either within sight, or at its edge, or right within it.

as beautiful as it is though, i would trade it for the sea anytime - i love the forest, but am a sea person at heart.

panta, we share a mutual problem -

i love and respect the dry desert
but my heart longs for moisture -
unbound rivers, lakes to oceans
each increases my creativity...
my potential of being, my very soul.

yes... the motion of the waters.
the flow, the crashing of the waves, the tidal powers.

the wetness. the mystery.
the sky on their surface,
the soul in their depths.

like brothers, like sisters,
they take us by the hand
and lead us home to ourselves.

the mountains, the sea,
the water crashing takes me home,
which has to do with gravity,
the one that made scientists pull out their hair,
and i respect moisture, but my heart longs for a dry desert.
i've lived near a sea port, and it gets wetter.
the rain feeds and feeds, never stops crashing.
god, the rain... collect it again (and again).
and i go to sleep with some difficulty
beside a swollen gray river, bright gray.

which is to say that these photos will kill what was instilled in me as one of my darkest fears- that of the black forest after sunset. i've heard of the black forest thru legends passed over the continents, but.... this green and light. the legend writers might have missed it. they tend to miss those things.

mnaz - the black forest IS deep and black. there just are some lighter shades as well.

i live on its edge where the shadows roll like tides. inside, it is all thicket and legend and pine-green darkness....

here you can get an idea of its blackness:

Image

this is a mountain moore lake in the black forest close to where i live. it has a floating island on it (which is mentioned in the guiness book of records), and is located at an altitude of 1'000 meters above sea level.

its name, "nonnenmattweiher", means "nuns' meadow lake", but i have no idea where the name comes from.

it's a wonderfully refreshing place to go on a hot summer's day, when the air down in the rhine valley is too hot to breathe and think straight.

i took this picture several years back, with a cheap non-digital camera. this is a picture of the original slightly blurry picture.
