THE GREAT HANK KETCHAM ("Dennis the Menace")

Post by Zlatko Waterman » March 7th, 2007, 11:09 am

A good friend of mine, an illustrator for MARVEL and DC comix and a dozen other companies, a storyboard artist on NARNIA and NARNIA 2 and many other films, winner of an Emmy, etc.etc. once pointed to the wall of his studio where a small cartoon hung in a plain black frame.

"If you want to study a real pen-and-ink master ( though he used the brush too), look at that guy-- Hank Ketcham!"

"The Dennis the Menace cartoonist?" I asked, flummoxed.

"Yep-- one of the great masters of ink."

I edged up close to the wall and looked at the drawing, hung amid originals by other undisputed masters of cartoon illustration, like Alex Toth and Joe Kubert. It was an original Dennis the Menace panel by Hank Ketcham, signed and everything.

Well. I'd never looked so closely at those lines before. WOW!

The man drew lines like Coltrane blew phrases.

Here are a couple of features on Henry (Hank) Ketcham, one of the twentieth century's greatest cartoonists. Though perhaps he didn't have the grand scale of Charlie Schultz's genius, and perhaps he had a shade less accomplished set of lawyers and managers, he's one of the very great greats.

Leif Peng's charming story of how Hank Ketcham discovered the pen. Includes some great HK artwork. Don't forget to click the link at the end of this article to see even more HK art.

And here's the "WIKI" on Ketcham:

Until next time,
