miles from civilization

by neologistic
The local diner flexes its staff
to meet the growing surge
of lawn mowers and wall washers.

grubby hands,
full of carefree
and restful disregard for table manners.

weathered eyes,
watching suspiciously
of newcomers and out-of-towners.

pot bellies,
stretched under simple colored pocket shirts
tucked in and wearing smudges like pinstripes and badges.

pinto beans and cornbread,
fishing poles and a bucket of bait,
rusted pile of farm equipment rotting in a pasture,
blueberry skies and old gravel crossing train tracks

there's something about diners
rural or urban
ain't nobody better or worse
since we got the damned rednecks
flushed with anger
out the back door where they belonged
gloomy and morose
i like old town diners
with beans and a hot dog

I'll drink to that... Listen to this little ditty,
by a feller who has been underappreciated lately,
God is Great! :
