AMAZING DAWN

By Steve Plonk

Awakened by chirping of August birds in trees
Hoverings of the hummingbird
Outside my window, buzzing of the bees—
Hummingbird was cruising next to a rose,
Sparrows were dancing in the sprinkle-hose…

Had to leave the sprinkler overnight because no
Rain happened in sight,
But this morning, I was amazed by the mist
Which floated with the birds,
Ground so thirsty that it hissed—

I heard a distant thunder of an approaching
Storm of raining hail,
I knew hail would be melting as soon as it hit,
Meantime, I was orbiting with the birds a bit…

Out of body experience occasionally happens with me,
My mind just floats in etheric trajectory—
First the hair on the back of one’s neck sticks up,
Then one’s mind flies out of the skull’s nest,
Wrestling with the spirit which listens the best…

Scents and sensations float in the air with your mind,
One has second sight and is no longer earthbound blind---
Difficult to explain except when in the muse,
Only way to get it out without being obtuse…
This muse is my latest excuse to expound on my latest find.

While orbiting above the trees, I look down on my house,
Later confirming it with a satellite view with sound,
So goes the muse as I am writing this down,
Like being up in a piper cub plane,
My mind becomes part of an astral chain,
As I connect with the readers of this poem.
Boonmats of the net, unite again,
I’m homeward bound—amazing dawn.

Perhaps some of my poems will strike a chord within you. I'm no poet, just an ordinary woman who writes simple lines dancing forth from my heart, weaving my observations, imaginations and experiences about love into words

Appreciate your praise, Demerara Lady... I' ll try to live up to the standards of this poem...
I think I'll make this a thread... So I may keep track of my progress on this site... My thread on Studio Eight is called "Blasting Caps from the Vault" in various partitions.

Folks post a whole lot on this site & I am amazed by how fast the page fills up... So, if folks can't always
stop in, they may wave as they pass by...

SUNSHINE PILLOWED KINGDOM
By Steve Plonk

Woke up in the sunshine
Been with you all night
Within my mind
I’m feeling sunshine pillowed
Clouds with silver lining
Though under that willow,
I feel as though I could cry—
But, under this here willow, I feel
A sunshine pillow…
You’re resting my eyes.
***
In our starlit kingdom
The sun never quite shines
Moonbeams dance—
Reflecting on our skin—
In our twilight kingdom
We feel so fine—no one’s around
To pay us any mind—
In our kingdom,
We are always leaving the sunset &
Awaiting the aura of dawn—
Crimson fingers groping through
The clouds of our starlit kingdom…
An interlude before dawn’s arrival
We revel in the night
With dawn’s anticipation…

SEARCHING FOR SUBLIMITY
By Steve Plonk

Moonrise, & rainclouds
Passing in front of the moon
Lets us know that all is now
Hidden from total natural joy.

We are guests on this inherited
Green & blue earth,
Partly noticing the sublime
Upon sighting penultimate beauty—

Beauty escapes us suddenly,
With the natural storm—
Momentarily, beauty passes
Our understanding with floods of night—

Then, much later on, the magenta of dawn
Makes everything dry & clarified...
Waters recede with darkness & gloom
Leaving us with the resounding joy
Of sublime answered prayers—
We glimpse twin rainbows!

How does the rising moon (moonrise) pass in front of itself (the moon)?

Gibson, very interesting... The clouds passed in front of the moonrise...I was just being redundant. I don't see how you saw it that way... Moon doesn't stand still for clouds & vice versa. The earth is constantly turning...
"Later on is into day..." The events did not coincide in the poem...No, of course, the moon can't pass in front of itself... What a hallucination! :o Huh!?
Thanks for reading...

I saw it that way because without a comma after moonrise, setting "moonrise" off as the circumstantial clause you intended it to be, that's what your syntax (which presently has moonrise and clouds together as the subject of the verbal phrase "passing in front of ...) makes you say. You need to pay better attention to/brush up on the rules of punctuation.

Thanks for the tip...I put in an extra comma, but, personally, I don't see how it helps. Gibson, I appreciate your double vision...

Grammar sometimes gets in the way of poetry...It's fun to see the hallucination like you do...
It adds mystery to the poem. Nature has a way of flashing us back...but I bow to the "king's english".
What a hodge-podge of language it is on both sides of the Atlantic... 8) 'Nuff said...

I'm sorry to hear it,

Gibson, I appreciate your double vision...

Tell me, what difference does the comma (and the lack of it) make in these two sentences:

Eats, shoots, and leaves.

Eats shoots and leaves.

Grammar sometimes gets in the way of poetry.

It does? Can you give me some example of it doing so?

Many poets have skirted grammar with great success. Many more have failed. E.E. Cummings is well known for giving grammar the proverbial finger, but he takes his anarchy one step further and actually alters basic sentence structure, and manages to do so quite effectively. quote:writing forward.com

Too bad you didn't go on to quote the rest of what is at this link, especially:

Toying with grammar rules is one such device, but it is not something that can be approached carelessly. If you choose to forgo the rules because you don’t know them rather than as a creative technique, your lack of knowledge will show and the poem will present as amateurish. Of course, that’s true for all types of writing: learn the rules, and only after you have learned them, go ahead and break them.

Note too that nothing at this link says grammar gets in the way of poetry.

Thanks, everybody, for stinting so nicely. Yes, I feel myself under the influence of e. e. cummings. He had plenty of fine examples of playing with language. I try to do this also. But, I am writing poetry for a modern age...In addition,
I also like Tennyson...Especially: "Crossing the Bar" ... and am fond of the ellipsis ; "...", dashes ; "--" & line breaks "\". So, all punctuation isn't lost on me, Jeffrey.

I would like to add that "Business English" was one of the few
English classes in which I got high marks in college...However, in my humble opinion, like Demerara Lady, I think sometimes one has to open a new page when writing poetry...Hey, even the editors & publishers make typos from time to time or see things a different way from the poets &/or authors. I appreciate good stinting when I see it.
Folks, Thanks again...

THE PREMIER FLIGHT OF THE COLUMBIA
By Steve Plonk

Written at the sight
Of the first flight of the “Columbia”
When it came back from space—
The hope of it all is that the
Stars again seem closer tonight—
Most tumultuous journey
Of a spacecraft since Apollo-Soyuz, 1975
Or the moon landing in July 1969…
***
Humanity should send praises for G-d’s grace
That a space shuttle can now go from place
To place from space,
Humanity is now even closer to the angels—
Word bubbles burst forth in praise,
Joys abound during this occasion…
***

Science fiction is now reality—
Space stations are now
Within our collective grasp,
As the very ground calls out in Spring welcome…
To the astronauts, which accents
Their space voyage return…
Praise the mentors who conceived of the space shuttle,
Praise those who worked on it,
Praise our world’s brave astronauts,
Finally praise those like Da Vinci
Who first dreamed of the trip…

Written April 4, 1981, Revised Sept. 17, 2012,
Upon the journey home of the ISS astronauts,
& in memory of the “Columbia” disaster
Feb. 1, 2003…

Also published on Studio Eight, in the Poetry forum
In my thread “Blasting Caps From the Vault, Part 3”
On Sept. 17, 2012.

Folks, I hope that it is no "biggie" that I turned this into a thread. See my introduction...Here's the fifth poem in
the series. It's a shorter one... :)

PRECOGNITION MUSE
By Steve Plonk

In my dreams, I work my way
Past a pallor of strangeness
Upon the wheels of times
Long doted on, & I park my mind in
The arbitrary present, which is stacked
With predictive memory/
***
Future can be seen in its many parts—
Some red & golden luminous
Visions during an afternoon thunderstorm—
I have faced my fears upright &
Unblinking, but the library of the
Macabre beckons to show me more/
***
In the non-print section, is the
Tapestry theater, which has many
Film strips & perceptual loops
Available to those who go past
The free arcade & through the double-doors
With the faces of comedy & tragedy upon them…

Written on 2/4/81, Revised Sept. 22, 2012.

FROM THE VAULT: The Dream Monuments
By Steve Plonk

The listing ancient monuments
Waver for a minute before
Collapsing in a heap
Of Bygone rubble of the
Twin Towers—
Nothing but a memory to us,
To others it’s just a pile of rocks.
But, I know that every
Generation has its dreams,
Once a dream goes out of
Style, it can be lost
Temporarily, only to re-emerge
At some distant time—
For I am a 19th Century man
Stuck in the 20th Century and
Headed for the 21st…

The main event has yet to happen…
I’m just here to observe
The Monuments and their last
Throes of destruction--
This civilization will be reborn like Rome
Into something totally
Unlike current imaginings—
Dreams tell me more than
What is in my subconscious
Dreams preconceive future
Reality in symbolic terms—
Dreams solve problems
For the sleeper--
So I record many of them:
The most recent was a
Wedding and the promenade
Was “Danse Macabre”
All my friends were there
I saw them in the tapestry
Hanging on the wall--
Who’s wedding?
Uncle Sam was the groom…
The bride was the Statue of Liberty…

Written 1/20/83, Published on Litkicks “Action Poetry”,
On May 5, 2005, (along with Cantos 41 & 42…Published May 1st & May 3rd, 2005, respectively…)
Second Revised version…Additional Author's Notes: The only thing changed was some punctuation, & spacing--an uncanny poem... Author reserves reprint rights. Poem appears to predict the fall of the trade towers in New York. It was found in my notebooks in 2001 & I hesitated to publish it until years later. Herein is the reprint...

Greetings, felicitations, from the high & holy highway...
From the sidelines, with new bylines,
To inspire you, or to amuse you by degrees...
Hey, & folks, don't take me so seriously,
Since I write so fast & furiously,
When the muse arises in my being,
I rip into the scene in a new gathering,
Sometimes in jest & blathering... :)

Herein is Steve Plonk back on the air...

I LOVE THAT POCOSIN COUNTRY (Lyric)
By Steve Plonk

I love that Pocosin country
The boondocks near the coast
So wild & wooly,
I take me Pocosin Mama &
She takes her heart to me—
She grows my crops
And takes good care of me…

Fill the ‘baccer barn with burley,
Fill the dryin’ shed with crimp,
Fill the dryin’ barn with corn- harvest
And get a tub of breaded shrimp…
In the style ye likes the best…

Gotta wait ‘til our ‘baccer’s curin’,
Gotta wait ‘til they dries a bit,
Gotta wait ‘til our ‘baccer’s curin’,
Load ‘em on trucks & get ‘em shipped…
In the style ye likes the best…

My corn goes to ‘Lisabeth City,
Or Wilmington or Little Washington,
Best get ‘em there a-lookin’ pretty,
So’s folks can feel that ours is best…

So’s folks kin smoke pipes & cigarettes,
We sell to Norfolk in the north &
Raleigh in the west,
Then the world kin enjoy our tobaccer,
And roll what they like to roll the best…
I’m proud to be Pocosin ‘baccer packer
So wild & wooly…

Lord, I love my Pocosin country,
The boondocks near the coast
So wild & free,
I love my Grand Pocosin Mama
‘Cause she grows my crops
And takes good care of me—
I takes me heart to her,
She takes her heart to me…

Whatever style ye likes the best,
Ye wildwood flowers—
I love mey Grand Pocosin Country/

GIBSON FARM (lyric)
By Steve Plonk

Gibson’s Farm, raised his head,
Right below my night sky friend—
Mars is in all his glory & trend,
Lumber mill’s a-sawing…
Walked ten miles, to Tryon,
To find my way, my friend—
Many people saw the star &
Blood moon foreboding,
But did not look, while lumber toting…
So, I read the good book
Romans 14, verse one thru,
Read it, maybe you will find
An answer or two…
***
Then I worked in the carpet mill
White peeked fence surrounding,
Just for a few dollars an hour & cents,
Walked to work & hence…
Peace on you, my friends,
Fifty yard rides to the post office,
But none on the highway
(Which never ends)

During a chicken dinner starvation factory fantasy,
Having a bargain basement clothes bummer,
Enduring a hot summer, as lumber trucks rumble,
Imagining being in a “Little Chicago” beanery,
After work, you missed the scenery,
But I’m watching Gibson farm grow…

(Aug. 1971--Sept. 1971, Revised Feb. 2012)

Was also published on Litkicks.com’s “Action Poetry”, on Feb. 7, 2012, dated Feb. 6, 2012.
Minus one extra space in the third stanza, edited, separating the two stanzas… Poem was a
featured item. Poem is in a slightly differing format...

REALIZATIONS
By Steve Plonk

Time to realize that freedom is not a joke,
Time to resurrect freedom without the mirrors and smoke,
Freedom is earned by the blood you've bled,
From the dreams you've yearned...
To these words I have now returned...

So read this across nearly forty years of time...
Do some of these words read sublime?
Are some words just simply absurd?
Or will these words really be heard?
Do these words still have worth?
Tell me if I still speak the truth.

FOUR MORE YEARS

By Steve Plonk

We brought it back with Barack, Jack
We brought it back with Barack
Four more years
Have suppressed our fears
We brought it back with Barack
Obama
We brought it back with Barack
Sunshine shines on our national mama
We brought it back with Obama
Liberty, Equality, Tranquility...
No more Romney/Ryan trauma.
***
We brought it back with Barack, Jack
We brought it back with Barack
No more Romney/Ryan Frick & Frack
We brought it back with Barack, Jack
Sun shines on our national Mama
We brought four more years with Obama.

AUTUMN WONDERLAND
By Steve Plonk

Leaves are falling
Breezes are blowing
Walking in a leafy wonderland…
We glimpse bird’s feathers glisten
Hear songs in the trees, as we listen…
Some folks we are missing,
As we’re walking this autumn day—

As other friends & family come our way…
The creeks are burbling
Colors in the trees flash about
As we fish for speckled trout
Out in the autumn wonderland…
***
Squirrels & raccoons are chattering,
As through the gravel our feet are clattering,
Walking those leafy pathways,
We’re awed by the color,
On this November Thursday,
As the breeze blows briskly,
Our pets behave friskly,
Rolling in the leaves near the trail…

See a bright boating byway,
As we later float down the causeway,
In that autumn wonderland…
Leaving a rippled water tale…
Right before our Thanksgiving meal…
