Amazing Dawn Poems, Part 2

Postby Steve Plonk on December 1st, 2012, 11:20 pm
First Entry, of Series...

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT
By Steve Plonk

Baby, you are so right--
You are the real girl for me
That's the way it is & you &
I have just met, but I'm
Hypnotized by you...
I am caught by the loving caresses
Of your eyes...
Tresses of your hair are like
Beautiful snowflakes
Shining in the sun--
Your skin as smooth as the
Silky sand on the beach--
Smooth as a feather--
You hold me like a magnet--
I may go mad if you leave me--
Ruby lips like a red butterfly--
Oh, you are intoxicating--
Please stay, oh, stay!

Written Circa May, 1968, Revised Dec. 2012.
(Author's Note: Hey, I got that second date, etc.--the poem worked!)

“Fixing to Win Rag” Penny Haiku
By Steve Plonk

Well, come on all of you, allies, women & men,
Prez Obama needs your help again.
He’s got himself a brand new plan
Way down yonder in Afghanistan
So put down your books & pick up a gun,
We’ve got the Taliban on the run.

Hey, allies out there, we need a helping hand,
Way the sandhill out there in Afghanistan...
Come on, fine people show us the way,
S/he who ducks & covers lives to fight another day...

Also published with a slightly differing form in StudioEight.tv in the Poetry Forum in "Some Penny Haiku, Part 4".

Afghanistan is a world away...didn't hear the news when this poem was written. I wrote it as a
parody of Country Joe McDonald's "Fixing to Die Rag".

Senseless murders in
Connecticut...not yet a subject for this thread,
probably a poor time to post it, had I known. :( From the Bible, Revelations 21: 4-7, see below,

4And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. 5And he that sat on the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said to me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. 6And he said to me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to him that is thirsty of the fountain of the water of life freely. 7He that overcomes shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

THE MILE
By Steve Plonk

Arms & legs churning
Back & forth, up & down,
Heartbeat ringing in the ears...
Striving & straining to
Come in first.

After the second lap it is
Heard faintly, the game is
Going again, it is almost
Unbearable, it continues
Like a torture.

A pool game is going on
Inside the head—the billiard
Balls are racked up &
The cue stick reverberates—
The spheres scatter.

On & on the game continues
Balls sink into the pockets
One after one after one—
Must not let the eight ball go
In prematurely.

Keeping legs from coming
To a halt—finished third lap—
Now, the game ponderously
Crawls on to the last three—
Eight, nine, & six.

Faster & faster—cue to
Nine to six, right corner pocket
Eight ball in side cavity—
Quickly across the finish line,
YEA, PLACED FIRST!

Circa Spring 1967, Revised Dec. 21, 2012.

"Two Milleniums Penny Haiku"
By Steve Plonk

a)
Sometimes we wonder
Why there aren't any spoons?...
Just plenty of knives & sporks,
With starving people ready
To cut something in various
Corners of the globe...
In the background,
The radio plays:
"O Little Town of Bethlehem"--
***
b)
Poor Bethlehem, rests its
Collective head on stones...
Meanwhile, a shiny beast
Slouches its way to Bethlehem,
As the pilgrims try to survive
A week in the "Holy Land"...
Grant us a boon, Savior King,
Who was visited by three
Wise men bearing three gifts...
More than two thousand years ago--
What gifts do we really have
To top these, many eons hence?
***
c)
The Grand Conjunction & Star
Came to rest over the stable in
A cave, as shooting stars
Announced the angels watching,
As the animals about him stood,
The cattle, the sheep, the donkey,
Barn dogs & cats, the shepherds--
Savior King born in a stable rude
All glory is yours, & what is man,
To be able to glimpse your message?
***
d)
Around 7 B.C., a nova & a Grand Conjunction
Announced Jesus' birth, so say the
Astronomers of this day,
But the astrologers of the early
Days found the Savior lying in
A manger in a cave, because his folks
Could find no room at an inn...
***
e)
Jesus was born to die so
That we might be saved:
Etching a tapestry of western thought...
Who are we to be able to glimpse his message?
"Now abide these: Faith, Hope, Love,
But the greatest of these is Love..."
May we not hear the clanging cymbal,
But hear the horn of Gabriel...

PENNY HAIKU #181
By Steve Plonk

“Big Bandana” Series:
“Samson”
I recall Samson, the
Dumpster cat
Sitting on the fence
Behind the Dixie Barbeque
Winking at me and you
Wagging his big black tail,
Under a big bandana.

PENNY HAIKU #182
By Steve Plonk

“Dow-gee” the huge
Black lab retriever
Waddles down the streets
Of the “Hood”
Barking his low bark
At passing cars
Under a big bandana.

PENNY HAIKU #183
By Steve Plonk

Down by the old supermarket,
They refurbished the vacant lot.
After the rains, the lake gulls sit
And peck at each other on the idle
Paving equipment.
Under a big bandana.

entitled POEMS FOR MY DAUGHTER: PENNY HAIKU.

Readers, where you at?

Hey Steve... though I like your work, I wanted to answer your question. I don't think you'll get very many readers or replies unless you reply to the works of others and interact with them. Just an idea.

I stop by and read your works from time to time and I like your writing (just to let you know) but since they're all in one post, it makes it harder to reply to them. I do that, too, sometimes. I post a series of poems in one post (not one after the other like you, but similar... a series)... and rarely anybody replies to the series posts I post and I interact with the community so I'm thinking maybe both of us should just post one at a time in separate threads and also interact with the community and reply to their pieces, too.

I'm just answering the question you posed which I quoted. :) Happy New Year!

Doreen, glad you like my poems. My poems are in a series because they are easier to keep track of.
After I've published a few, like between twelve & twenty-five, if they are small poems, I retire the thread
& start a new one... 8)

I do reply & comment on others poems. I can think of several regulars I read.
I don't think it's that hard to scroll down. . Some threads have several pages… I've gotten more than a hundred hits on this one, but no comments until yours. I am unlikely to change my way of doing it. It's their business whether folks comment back or not. Some folks poetry is more popular than others...
I've already retired one thread on this site.

OK. I wasn't trying to tell you what to do. I was only trying to to answer your question, since you asked, and to make a suggestion. ;) Yes, I see you get views and that's a good thing! Do your thing, however you want, of course! Glad to know you've found some poets on this site you enjoy reading and replying to, also. Take care! Keep that pen moving. ;)

PENNY HAIKU #184
Huge downpour washes the frogs
Upstream back into the frog pond
‘Cause a log jam backed
Up the drainage slough,
Under a big bandana.

PENNY HAIKU #185
Turtles with quizzicle looks
Flop heads in and out of their shells
While floating on a log,
In a fast flashing stream
Under a big bandana.

PENNY HAIKU #186
Little children try to float
And catch wooden boats
With strings
As the gully washes and the ducks
Are having a large time
Under a big bandana.

PENNY HAIKU #187
Families Christmas shop
At gift shops on the North Shore
Of the Tennessee River
Looking at rings, T-shirts
And big rainbow bandanas

PENNY HAIKU #188
No business like gift shop business
On rainy fall days, looking for
Umbrellas, socks and pendants—
With cats-eye rocks,
Under big bandanas.

PENNY HAIKU #189
We’d all be fine
If the Chinese
Continue to be kind
Remembering we all
Enjoy knick knacks
And tapestries,
Along with egg rolls
And egg drop soup.
Stir in peace with the
Stir fry, friends.
Under big bandanas.

PENNY HAIKU #190
The leaders of our land
Must be made to understand,
That PEACE also needs plans—
Let peace break out all over,
Shaking hands.
Smiles are contagious,
So are homecomings.
Under flag bandanas

PENNY HAIKU #191
Sitting in Janell’s
(A new restaurant)
Taking place of the
“Coral Reef” and “Tiki Hut”
On the Northshore
Eating a lox sandwich
Under a big bandana’
In Chattanooga.

PENNY HAIKU #192
Two cats play—
Mishki and Stella
In a distinctive living room,
In a distinctive house,
In a distinctive neighborhood,
In woodsy hills—
Under a big bandana—
To remind us all of who we are.

Read you through Steve, but find it difficult to find the time and place to add comments, or note the bits I like best, (Dow-Gee's low bark at passing cars, for instance, and that lesson in pool where you advise us to carefully keep the '8' ball safe, and a typo with quizzicle/quizzical US spelling maybe, etc. ), and perhaps you don't want these notes any way, but you do want people to read, and I did, BUT with difficulty due to your presentation, and my lack of time. :D gg

BATMAN ROBOT CAUGHT THE DZHOKHAR
By Steve Plonk

Batman robot caught the Dzhokhar,
That ethnic Chechen didn't get too far,
After he fled from that stolen car...
They converged upon him in a backyard boat,
Captured that bloody Dzhokhar sloat...

Dzhokhar was such a stone faced killer,
That he ran over his own dead brother...
Hope he's thrown under the jailhouse,
Because Dzhokhar is a bombing killer louse...

Boston, I hope, will now rest in ease,
Now that those Chechen bombers
Aren't in the breeze...

PENNY HAIKU #171
(FOR MY WIFE, YOUR MOM)
“Defibrillator”
By Steve Plonk

All I know is that I want your love.
All I know babe is that I want your love.
Want you so bad, can’t sleep at night—
All I know, babe, is I need your love…
I used to work from dusk till dawn,
When I’d get home you’d get it on.
Defibrillator, that’s me, need to stay in sight--
All I know , babe, is I need your love at night,
Hey, I remember the way it s’posed to be,
We did each other into ecstasy.
All I know, honey, is I want you badly.
Want you just for me…Defibrillator…
The older I get, the more I want,
I can’t get enough of your tough love—
I 'm your love “defibrillator”.

From “Poems for my Daughter: Penny Haiku”
Circa Summer 2000.
