Amazing Dawn Poems, Part 3
Part One, of this thread...

UNDER THE DOME LISTENING TO LEON RUSSELL
By Steve Plonk

Listening to the Will “O” the Wisp tape watching ,
Once again evening shadows fall
The evening is fast approaching and my airport
Customers are cheerful as I take tickets/cash and exchange
Pleasantries, once again, watching evening shadows dip down
Like a sundial.

Why the threefold use of "evening" and the repetition of "once again"? It's almost as if you forgot that you just used these expressions. Moreover, sundials are stationary objects. They do not dip down, so your simile jars, and it is unclear who is doing the "watching" you speak of.

Steve

Have you considered posting your poems as separate poems? I'm not complaining, just wondering why you don't, as, if you did, you might get more exposure, and hence more readers and comments. Just a thought.

Folks, I post my poems in one long thread to keep track of them better as a collection. I explained that in an earlier thread. Thanks for posting.

I use repetition in my poetry to mark the passage of time. I used to spend ten hours a day at the terminal.
The airport terminal had a very interesting rotunda which had windows acting like a sundial which, as you know,
is stationary. The shadows did an interesting show through the many windows. One could tell what time of the
day it was from the way the shadows were moving through the windows. The whole wide world is watching.
I have just a few who are lurking...

"The sun has risen, the sun is set, & I ain't out of the airport yet."

Just a little word from an old pelican bird, don't be afraid to post humorous poems or be absurd.
"Get rhythm, if you get the blues..." sang Johnny Cash. "He whose not busy being born is busy dying..." sang Bob Dylan. I continue the tradition of constantly risking absurdity. Life is that thing that happens to you when you're
making other plans, to paraphrase the bard, John Lennon. :-*

“On With the Show”
By Steve Plonk

Spank ‘em if they’re bad, kiss ‘em if they’re good.
I don’t think any of us always does as we should.
If you’re feeling bad and I’m feeling good,
I’m gonna see how I can help if I could.

Food in the belly, roof over your head,
Air conditioning and a telly…
Not to worry, be in no hurry,
Easy does it, be flow with your go.
Hey, folks, let’s get on with the show.
Band’s gotta keep chooglin’, don’t you know?
Then, once again we’re headed down the road...
Soon to drop this heavy load...

Circa 2003, with small additions...

Hello, SP.

Is the name an actual name, or is it — as I now begin to wonder — slang-speak for rough wine?

I don't need an answer, but my curiosity is piqued.

Bobkaven, Yeah, I got "Plonk" from Australian slang meaning "rough", "cheap", or "new" wine. I got "Steve" from the "Saint Stephen" tune in the "Aoxomoxoa" album by the Grateful Dead. :)

Since I constantly risk absurdity, I shall post some of my "scat penny haiku", also see Studio Eight.
All these gems were from several years backlog. (Keep in mind that my reference is to "Henry Gibson" of the
ancient regime TV show, "Laugh In", in penny haiku number three in this series...)

"SCAT PENNY HAIKU" (1)
By Steve Plonk

To pee, or not to pee,
Is that the question?
Whether pointers or
Sitters be--
Yet, we are all joiners,
Making the world wet...
This we must not forget.
***

"SCATTY PENNY HAIKU" (2)
By Steve Plonk

I'm proud to be
An American,
I'm happy to be free,
But I wish I was a pit bulldog,
& John Boehner was a tree...
I'd wet him down & he would cry &
he'd call his wifey to dry his eye.
***

"SCATTY GOOBERS FOR HEAVEN PENNY HAIKU" (3)
By Steve Plonk

(a)
There were lotsa scatty goobers
Who dropped all their loobers,
To try to capture farties--
Rubes, too, were roped in
The vigilant corral--
Where they bellowed like cattle
Over apocalyptic prattle,
With vertical smiles
Holding their drooling chiles,
Were disappointed by
A tongue-tied preacher,
Who misinterpreted a biblical teacher,
Captured everyones achy breaky farty
With musical notes off the charty...
***
(b)
Hearty har har, goes Christy in her flash car...
Sorry about that, Henry Gibson,
But my sight seems to turn like a prism,
Flashing & dashing & dipping my wick,
Until my hearty goes tick, tick, tick...
These fake revelations make me sick, sick, sick...
So let's wait another ten yarn,
Then, another rube, good lasso-er
Will come along with a big corral,
To turn regular ears into a sows...
Oxycontin to the unwashed masses...

this is very amateurish, and as Jeffrey noticed the repetition is boring,
'plonk' as aussie slang is 1960's, something I'd use but my daughter's generation call it 'goon'. You seem yo have an enthusiastic approach to poetry, a pity you can't combine that with some understanding of the poetic canon.

Overheard while working in US detox in early 70's and intermittently since while chatting with alcoholics. Heard also in conversations with folks in Scotland and in England as recently as 2001. Of course it may have gone out of fashion there since.

Folks, Poetry is in the eyes of the beholder. Wine is in the taste of the palate. My pen name is supposed to be humorous. Repetition in lyrics & poetry is sometimes called a "refrain". I like the way I write my humorous poetry.

Some folks don't like e. e. cummings, Vachel Lindsay, or Ogden Nash. I do...These guys are some of my mentors,
as is Jack Kerouac & Gary Snyder. The poems may be read at two or more levels. If one is just going for the
sardonic and/or bathroom humor, one may read at that level. These poems are political poems similar to political cartoons... It's okay to be "goon" once in a while. That's what "constantly risking absurdity" is about.

Folks, I know people whose last name really is Plonk. Enough of that...Thanks for scrolling down & reading my archived poems. Folks at the other site thought they were humorous & animated.

General humour is easy to capture though, even I wrote one for teacher so that I could get out of trouble.
Working from memory but it was in the style of the poem we had just discussed previously:

This Is Just To Say

I'm sorry
for treating
you a fool.

The girl hid
in the cupboard
after you knocked.

Panicking
I decided to lie.

Next time,
I won't get caught.

I borrowed from a better poem to capture the humour so it's pretty artificial, but I felt in terms of content and audience it was pretty good. If you insist on creating funny poems, can't it be a little bit more original and just slightly more interesting? Like "Scatty Penny Haiku" you are just borrowing from Shakespeare and not bringing much cleverness into it. Good humour is witty, I can't find much wit here.

"Vaulting out of the Vault"

By Steve Plonk

To my readers everywhere
Who to this poem pull up a chair,
Who read me mostly on air,
I write for "the eternal you",
Yes all of you whom I can't see
I try to reach those who
Never write to me,

I hope that a few nuances
Will stick like downy feathers
To help you through the stormy weather
That rolls through our lives,
From time to time,
Whether we are in the tropics
Or in a temperate clime,
Let me help you to pass the time,

To be your muse or amuse,
To be the poems you choose,
To lighten up your day,
That is why I sent these
Poems your way...

"When life's troubles hand us a lemon,
We are making some cool lemonade"
Into the cool lake waters of the mind
We shall to attempt to wade...
To change life's rude,
To a wonderful mood...

Boonmats...

by Steve Plonk

"Boonmats From the Net: A Retrograde, Part 2"

Loathings and fear in retroland,
Sternutations from the minds of
Boonmats from the net,
Are frazzling my head, yet
Realizing a point of view
Has seen the stage without a cue
Fear and loathing in the real world...
Remember when you melted sen-sen
In your mouth to ward
Off the smell of cigar smoke?
At any rate, it's half past late
The ants have crashed the
Party we had in hell's kitchen,
Rats are dancing in the courtyard,
Fear and loathing reigns in the world.
I'm in the alley with the foo fighter blues
All the crazies congregate the avenues--
It's one o'clock in the morning
Do you know where your chilluns are?
Lands sakes, lordy, lordy,
Don't forget to pull that parachute cordy,
While sky diving.
Minds, like chutes, even tied one on,
Work only when they're open.
To me, a little ebonics pidgin token
Speak to us, those lips
I always trus' to open
Chatty Kathy rides again across the airwaves.
Yes'm, we've bagged the enemy
Just like a cat inna bag--
I hate to be a killjoy,
I hate to be a nag.
The chocolate is delicious
But the "stokely" had to go...
Are you seeing the gnats
That rest upon the sand fleas?
While drinking "aarack" in Iraq
Until the sun don't shine?
Fear and loathing in TV land...
The pill box has been
Emptied of its contents--
The oxy and the ribose and
Dr. Mom and nucleic acid tells us:
Big-eyed fiends from Venus,
Don't you come between us ...

Author's Note: This is a reprint, in slightly different form,
from Litkick's "Action Poetry" on March 4, 2005, as a response to
Levi Asher's "Fear & Loathing" title.

HALLOWEEN AGAIN
By Steve Plonk

Halloween Halloween...
What a beautiful costumed scene.
People knock at the door,
Asking "Trick or Treat?"
A treat is what's in store.
Chewy sweets, & those sweets
Which melt in your mouth,
Gum & hard candy to chew.
Most candy wrapped like new.
A mummer's holiday,
An Autumn party time,
A time for favors & new flavors,
Halloween Halloween...
Candy corn & raisinettes bean,
Little ghosts & goblins at the portal,
Giggles, laughs, guffaws & chocolate chortle...
Halloween Halloween...
Halloween time again,
Welcome old acquaintances & friends...
See my new pattern,
For a jack 'o' lantern...

“FLY VAN: Another Dream”

By Steve Plonk

To: “doctors without borders”—
We lived in an airplane van,
Which flies help
Everywhere it can &
It’s alright by me…

Our plane is a sight to behold,
Painted green, white, & gold,
Well, its alright by me…

We have a little plan,
To help the poor & sick
When we can,
It’s alright by me…

Yes, we are
A merry band
Living in our
Flying van
That’s alright by me…

We help as many
As we can,
Living out of our
Airplane van,
That’s alright by me…
All in a dream,
All in a dream…

On a brave fine day…
In addition,
When we land, we have found,
Our fly van has a partition,
What a sight to behold,
A green cross on our hood,
Highlighted green, white, & gold,
It’s alright by me…

I'd like to ask you once again, Steve, to stop posting new pieces and revisions of old pieces under this thread's heading, and instead post them in threads separate from this one and under titles that are appropriate to each piece.

I know you said you don't want to do this because it is easier for you to keep them all in one place (or words to that effect). But unless you are writing only for yourself, isn't the issue what it is that will lend itself to getting your pieces read and commented upon?

The way your are currently (and for some time now) posting your new pieces and your revisions of old ones does not do this. It actually works against your presumed purpose in posting what you post.

PAGINATION, part 2, PENNY HAIKU

By Steve Plonk

a)
Here's another poetry page...
Sometimes I'm gaffe,
Sometimes I'm sage,
Sometimes we laugh,
Sometimes we weep,
Just like a little bird,
I peep, peep, peep.

b)
Crumbs for the mind,
To digest in kind,
We hope some rough
Golden bread nuggets,
One may find,
To nourish further
curiosity...
For the songs I sing--
One more I bring...

"Sounds of the Calliope"

by Steve Plonk

Giddyap go, Daddy, Diddygap yo, Daddy!
Send one across the bow,
Send that ship sailing into the continuum now,
Find a new great find from a busy mind,
Flow with the go...
***
On with the "big show"
"The Big Top" is beckoning,
The clowns are gathering.
The trapeze artists are flying,
The elephants have sneezed,
So "what has become of the monk?"
When we "went to the animal fair"?

I'm sure we all like the "three ring circus"
So let's hear the calliope once more!
"Come one, come all", watch wide-eyed the fabulous show(s)--
Perk up your ears & get ready to curl your toenails!

"The Atomic Clock"

by Steve Plonk

Just a wonderful helical trick,
That was discovered by Watson & Crick...
Did first come de tock or first come de tick?...
Den de chimes go ring, ring, ring,
On dat magical atomic clock thing...

Don't ask me a riddle, I don't know nothin',
My head long ago was filled with stuffin'...
Speak to me, Lord, with lips that never lie, &
I'll follow your trails into the stars in the sky...
Open my mental wings and I'll begin to fly...

TO MY CAT: The Duke of Chow
By Steve Plonk

Sweet Kitty cat
So furry & fine
Cat with lives nine

Who deftly jumps on
The window sill
Who brought in lizards & shrews
As his kill,
Who climbs virginia pine trees
By his sheer climbing skill--

Who stares lovingly at:
His empty water bowl or
His food dish--
Who magically gets
His every supper wish,
From a caretaker
Who loves him so...

Sweet kitty cat
So fine & furry,
Who savors his life,
Whose not in a hurry...

Sadly, on May 22nd, 2014, we lost our cat, "Duke", who was eighteen & a half years old. He had a stroke, &
moved his eyes & paws a bit, but was nearly paralyzed. After we got him to the animal hospital, Duke had a
second stroke & was unresponsive & in a coma. So, we had to put him to sleep. :(

Duke was an old cat & we had hoped he'd make it through the summer. But, unfortunately, that was not to be.
The hospital did all they could to stabilize our cat, but in the end, he had another stroke. We had him cremated
& he is buried in the backyard next to our other two cats. Suprisingly, Duke outlived our other two cats who
died at nine years, & thirteen years respectively. Now we are petless after eighteen & a half years.
It's an end of an era. :o :(
Author's note:
(Sorry for this prose, but I am not "waxing poetic" at the moment.
We finished painting Duke's grave about ten days ago...Grief is still fresh in my mind. For others, of my
readers, who have had pets pass away, you may know how we feel. To us, he was a part of our family.)
