i was three, circa 1950,
my new stepdad walked by
there was a white wall behind
like a tabla raza
a canvas for a painting
he stopped, showed me a metal widget,
handed it to me
and said, "this is what i make at work,"
and i looked at it, a confused lil ol piece of folded nonsense,
speechless,
handed it back to him
and he took it, speechless,
turned to his right,
and walked on.
when he has dying, 1977,
i went to visit
his words were all tangled up,
he said,
searching,
unable to recall my name,
"you are the one that had so much trouble,
and now you are ok,"
i swear,
he died two weeks later.

I like that story jimbo, he sounds like he was a good man.
