that i first came to despise
the privilege that paid for sociology 300
i've been sitting on the fence of dilemma
with a big mac in one hand and marx in the other
but poetry has saved me, and because it has saved me
i, in the great tradition that has produced the vatican,
will attempt to save you, perhaps a publisher
will recognize the value of my words
especially, if he
(or she - that happens you know)
has taken sociology 300 as well
i must save the black man/woman
asians too! i met one once

the dilemma

We all despise our origins, when there's suffering to bear and we haven't gotten, yet, a mouthful. The plight of the idealogical socialist is that he/she can only sympathize. Empathy is reserved for those who have nothing, and really they aren't, normally, as aware as everyone else.

I ask myself, is there a poet alive, a serious, thinking poet, who is not sitting on that same fence? Uncomfortable as hell, but there we are, lined up like birds on a telephone wire, balancing ourselves between capitalism and socialism, teetering between free trade and the gift philosophy, greed and giving ... the guilt inherent in what we want and what we feel that makes us poets. Well said, Constantine.

Well, while you were busy eating your big mac and reading marx while saving blacks and asians and even (omg! dare I say it?) female publishers, you managed to create a pretty darn amusing poem with literary value I'm sure that will last for decades but of that i'm not sure because I never took sociology 300 .... i was an art and english major..... which my dad so accurately described as, "That and 75¢ will buy you a cup of coffee" (but coffee was a lot cheaper way back when).... so what do I know other than I liked it, constandino!
