schorr alley

here, in cincinnati
we suffer from tectonic creep
the city slides like jello
on a sub-strata of slate
when it rains, the waters
sink into the earth, until
reaching the ancient, black
impenetrable shield
and then it just lays around, like
butter between slices of german rye
walls begin to buckle, basements leak
everything is out of whack
lop-sided, like a street scene
by kirchner or murnau, at night
sometimes, i walk up schorr alley
black rock lizards darting in and out
of the crevices, the chinks
in crumbling walls of limestone
beneath your feet, red
brick sheds its asphalt skin
and writhes like a reptile underneath

note to self: bring high rubber boots to cincinnati

and perhaps a lizard-proof vest
but i will make the trip, no doubt

thanks friends. the lizards are not indigenous to the area. a child returning with his family from a trip to europe smuggled some back in his socks! now they're all over the place.
