i saw kathy lemonakis on the bus,
the number 10, by mount royal station
back when the buses were green,
noisy and rickety
can't remember where i was coming from
or whether i was on the bus
before she got on or after,
forty years tends to smudge
but still i think of her often,
she was tall,
or at least taller than me
and slender, with round glasses
and her frizzy brown hair parted
down the middle, i must have been
thirteen or fourteen, kathy was older
i think she played violin or something
she had that look - like an english teacher
or someone who should be in the renaissance
a humanist, like fontana or anguissola
but i didn't know that back then, even now
it is pure speculation - a daydream
i'm sure we were friends, i liked her
and i still feel that she liked me
we lived in greektown,
and went to the same school
but i can only remember her on the bus

Had heaven only held one cloud
to which each generations' sense could rise,
would not its borders have allowed
them each an equal, infinite surprise?

we were trains
that missed each other
or ran off the tracks,
we had old schedules
we missed or kept like clockwork
we saw each other coming
and collided
separate realities

he had bibles in our hands
or begging bowls,
we spoke of nothing and
talked until we became deaf
with hunger and raw with courage
the wind on our backs,
sailing away

we searched for light or was it the darkness
of perpetual emptiness
we shared?

memories of what
we had forgotten or dreamed
we dreamed

These are golden words. That's the ticket--just to a train that's already left.
