hare loogie

i saw a glob of sputum this morning
oddly shaped, rather ill-defined
there, on the sidewalk
that i walk upon everyday
it reminded me of a hare
no, not hair - hare!
no, not there - here!
but not of your garden variety
this was a hare of yesteryore
the savage, monstrous lepus
that would leap out of his cave
at lascaux, or perhaps, altamira
to rip your flesh, and jump
up and down, up and down
until you said uncle
