kafeneion

after the train came
all the men have disappeared
at the kafeneion, where
we'd play tavli
to the gurgle of narghiles
and the rhythm of baglamas,
gone, even the words seem
foreign, strange
we are closed for repairs
there is a new alphabet in town
after the train came
what was once horizontal
has become upright, we talk
from balcony to balcony, leaning
across railings, necks extended
a stray cat chases a piece of string
caught in the jet stream, lost
within the walls of the labyrinth

is envy a mortal sin?
then forgive me
cause I envy poets for their license to travel through time and cultures.

Zakynthos? Of all I googled I liked that one the best.

yes, that does seem nice - there are still a few in greektown, but in athens they are closing up. the culture is changing - they've embraced the idiocies of the west.
