subject to scrutiny

other than his word
i had no way of ascertaining the truth
yes, i had doubts, and these doubts,
no doubt pointed to a maturity on my part
a sharpening of intellect that comes
with scholarship and experience
the story had to be scrutinized
held up to objective analysis
pared down, deconstructed
the elements broken apart
and reassembled, only then
would it stand under the blanching scrutiny
the scouring omniscient gaze of apollo
i asked him:
"did you, or did you not
butt heads with a ram?"
my father's eyes narrowed with gravity
and then widened, as if struck
by an epiphanous revelation
"of course, my son, we didn't
clash heads in the classic sense,
if "that" is what you mean, but rather
i grabbed the ram by its horns and
butted heads from a stationary position"
my doubts allayed, i went
out to play ball with my friends
