My pal
wink is a long-haired black cat
at least he was black in his youth
just like I was handsome in mine.
But time goes by
Wink's belly is gray now
and a little rotund
that's why we are such great companions
Every mortning he is waiting at the back door
at 7:30 when I get up
I let him in and when he meows
I say, "good morning, sir."
he meows again in reply
and makes his way to his bowl
he eats and then crawls up into my lap
as I sit at my computer.
He purrs and nuzzles
and then because he's old
and has kitty AIDS
he will vomit his meal on the floor
I clean it up and comfort him
love devours age and disease
at least he was black in his youth
just like I was handsome in mine.

i wrote this in 1989 for Wink.... he was just a kitten then.. now he's an old man cat
FAT CAT
The little cat we have named Wink
is much wiser than you'd think.
After I have fed him fish,
he'll turn his head and make a wish.
Pretending that he's not been fed,
he'll jump right up upon my bed
and wink his eye as if to say,
"I haven't yet been fed today."
And then he'll yawn and stretch his back
and nod as if it were a fact.
So I get up and follow him
into the hall, then let him in
the kitchen where he has his dish
that I thought I'd just filled up with fish.
And then he winks again at me
to point out what I just can't see...
because he's eaten up the fish
and nothing's there inside his dish.
Yes, Wink then smiles, it seems to me
and whines a bit deceptively.
He looks at me with big green eyes
as if to say my memory lies.
He rubs his back against my leg
and proceeds once more to meow and beg.
I stand there wondering if he's been fed
while wishing I were back in bed.
And so I fill his bowl again
and watch him as he digs right in.
I go straight back to bed and then
I climb beneath the covers and
I read a book to calm me down
because my memory can't be found.
I thought I'd already fed my Wink
but he's more clever then I think.
He eats and eats all through the day
and winks at me as if to say,
"Thank you so much for feeding me
but I'm still starving, can't you see?"
The day when Wink gets very fat
and becomes a thirty-five pound cat,
I'll remind him that my memory
is still an important part of me.
I'll wink at him as if to say,
"Don't you wish you'd saved some fish
so you wouldn't be so fat today?"
So when you wish you weren't so fat,
remember Wink, our little cat.

hehe... no, i wrote it when i first got Wink back in 1989.
We went to the pound to get a dog. Wink is a pound kitty. I looked at the dogs and I'm really not a dog person but my husband at the time wanted a dog, so I went and looked. And there were a lot of very nice looking dogs who looked friendly and lonely and affectionate, but being the cat lover I am, I scurried off to the cat cages and there was this little long haired kitten who looked up at me and winked. I had to have him.
I got the jailhouse guard to spring him for me. I signed the papers, agreed to have him neutered and paid the small fee which proved to them somehow that I'd give him a good home.
Then we took him home and had a name contest. Everybody wrote three names on a piece of paper and we put them in a hat. Then we'd pick out the name and vote on it. Eventually, we narrowed it down to Wink which was one of my submissions because he winked at me. And he's been Wink ever since.
He was Wink for about a week and then I wrote this poem I posted.
Glad to give you a laugh. Thanks much.
