on reading balzac and being satirical

in order to succeed
in the world
a woman must
be ruthless
in exploiting others
lest she be jilted
by a character
in a novel

and upon having
a large dowry
and riding horses

she must ride
them to the post
as if on a journey
and ride mercilessly
to the next relay
and then drop them
with compunction

and use each
successive horse
in a similar way
until the goal
of one's desire
is reached

in this world
of predator and prey
where we are either
exploited or the exploiter

if you have any real feeling
hide it like a treasure
and never let it be suspected
or you will be lost

a mask must be worn

where ambition begins
naive unreflecting
actions cease
