a tool to aid in the perceptions of my internal and external realities.
i agree that fear is a tool. i've seen it as a survival tool, used as an alarm when danger or trouble is perceived. but like you wrote, "... certainly helped many people at the time." I think many people don't use this tool, but rather become used by it. that's when the problems begin.

I think it was expressed...(somewhere in the kabbalistic belief), that
things like fear, anger and even ego can be looked upon as entities,
individually striving for attention... with the origin of these being not
internal, but rather external.

They are deserving of our acknowledgment, and need to be placed
in balance with the other countless aspects of our human condition.

The old woman had COPD. She was on oxygen. And she still smoked. She would turn the oxygen off remove the mask and light up. She went to the hospital emergency room because she was having an "anxiety attack”. The nurse called the attending psychiatrist to get an RX for a tranquilizer. The doctor refused to write a prescription until he had seen the patient. When he saw the old woman he would not give her the med to calm her down. He told her you are not having an anxiety attack what you are experiencing is fear.
And fear is the only thing you got going for you. The fear that comes from not being able to breathe.

There is a difference between fear and anxiety. I wish I had the amygdale of a cat. Cats have no anxiety about what is going to happen tomorrow. We confuse our worries about the future (anxiety) with fear.

fear is good

" Where shall I find a man who forgets about words, and have a word with him?"
I absolutely leaned forward and then stood up when I read this line.
