Fifth Grade

He had Bullwinkle eyes
and dreamed of penny candy
while the math teacher droned
and rain streaked the classroom windows.
He longed to meet Bilbo
and ask him how to pronounce
Silamrillion.
Rubies in his hockey pucks.
D's on his report card.

The small epithets here flash like a ghostly "Ring" at the bottom of a roiled, Tolkien-ian cave spring.

The character pops out from the background, swiftly limned.

Maybe it's the speaker, but it doesn't matter; the essential witchery has been performed, and the wayward pupil's imagination has been re-liberated.

Strong, whimsical, eerie and comic, in the Elizabethan sense.
