Upon reflection

Upon reflection

Truly, I loved you.
I've experienced love
in many shapes, colors and forms.
And you, I loved most deeply
and completely.

You crushed me,
broke the unity of Us
with the severity of your abandon.

True,
you are experiencing a circumstance
that has broken your spirit.
I offered to be the column
that would hold the weight of your burden.
I was the foundation,
but you were too weak to handle
the heaviness of life.

I see this now.
You losing your strength is your struggle,
and I am empowered enough to see
you've abandoned reason, not me.

Yet this you are undergoing,
does not excuse your neglect.

We all have boundaries that should never be crossed.
Through my life's struggles,
I've grown wise enough to know
I cannot continue giving all of myself to you
if you no longer love anymore.

Because we are finite people, occupying space and time, how could someone give something to someone else who isn't there to receive? But isn't there still something of love -- if not the all of us -- that we still try to send out like pulsed messages to alien planets, even when we have no reason to believe there's anything to take them in? I like this, Lucy, a lot.

What you've said strikes a note here-

Don't all of us, within the regions of our selves, hope to hear: "I need you, I will do anything for you, I will fight for you, my heart is yours, I will always love you." ?

We desire to hear these words from the one we love, because our loyalty runs true and deep. Because we would give our lives for them, and within us, we long to hear that they reciprocate those feelings...

How long do we stay with the one that once loved us but no longer believes they do? How long do we continue to give our selves, partially or fully, to the one who claimed they needed you, but has chosen to leave you in limbo? Despite the ache that slowly kills your hope, you stay, because you love unconditionally.

But-
How long do you sacrifice your sanity for the sake of someone else's indifference?

When do we let the reality of finality settle in and take a stand in one's life?

Life is not a spectator sport. Nor is love.
