Haiku No. 95 -- I am a godmother! (corrected number)

Post by Sue Littleton » November 14th, 2010, 8:04 pm

beneath downy breast
two tiny heads thrust forward
new hatched doves greet me

Desde el pecho velloso de su madre,
dos pequeñas cabezas aparecen;
palomitas recién salidas del cascaron me saludan.

Above your expected poem was a picture of seven magnificent white pelicans, waiting for those hatchlings. Boggling that Mama and Papa could be so trusting when so many of their kind are killed during "dove shoots" every fall in this country.

Trying to manage three cats and a nest of doves JUST outside their favorite window, now locked and barred, is making me a nervous wreck. I keep the iron shutters closed but have nightmares of them flying open ... ah, ´tis a hard life being a dove godmother, but thank you, dear hearts and gentle poets, I really wonder if this haiku is up to par. More emtion than embedded meaning ... Sue♥♥♥

It's late...and yet...congats!!! So, please forgive the license I take below, but you know how it coos....

A dove had found herself an home— as if
the psalmist wrote his eighty-fourth for her—
in poems like an ancient hieroglyph
of feathers, twigs and eggs; and as it were,
her life was balanced on the windowsill
that lit the kitchen of a woman’s space—
she nested near to salt and peppermill
for neighbors—and she counted on the grace
another mother (not a dove) might yet
afford. But when her squabbling chicks broke free,
their matron took another sobriquet:
their godmother—Your godmother I’ll be.
With Mary, ever blessèd, there she stood
within the spirit of God’s motherhood.

Oh, Joel, the poem is absolutely beautiful. Tender, moving, and so very close to home. Thank you, my dear, for such a marvelous tribute to dove godmotherhood! Cariños, Sue♥♥♥

P. S. (I thank you, Ms. Dove thanks you, the twins thank you, Mr. Dove struts around eating birdseed doing nothing, and the cats said to tell you to take a long walk off a short pier, but you know cats!)♥

Made a wee glitch in the Haiku Nos. This is No. 95 ...
