Queen Anne’s War

Post by Hollweg » February 8th, 2011, 10:34 am

They sent hundreds
to their graves
to sell slaves
to the Spaniards.

We left Mersey
in 1702—
sailed out
from Liverpool;

These greedy fools
made fortunes but lost
their souls.
They will all be undone.

My Davy said to me
“Why don’t Mark tell the story
of Thomas,
but only John does?”

Outside beyond
our small clutch,
snow drifts in the savage woods--
without bound,

strange and foreign.
I must have faith in
the calling
that brought us here.

I told Davy,
“Don’t you worry,
Mark knew John
would tell the story.”

God made the Hebrews slaves
so they would find him.
Then he freed them
with great force.

We cannot know the wherefore
of the Lord.
But, I will shed no blood
fighting Queen Anne’s war.

This poem has a historical feel to it. It appears that the narrator has actually
placed himself inside the era he writes about. I like this piece very much. 8)

I liked it very much too.
It gives "maximum net value for the cost of cognition"
