general earle wheeler
chairman of the joint chiefs said:
"speaking as a professional soldier
fallout-protection is key to our security
to give our population reasonable protection
and increase the credibility of our deterrent posture"
see figure 2
the assumptions are
nuclear weapons in excess of 5000 megatons in destructive power
are employed
the darkest areas indicate
where it would be necessary
to stay in the shelter for a week or two
persons in the light gray areas
would have to stay for
only a day or two
to understand reasons for civil defense
take a look at weapons of modern warfare
people of the united states must be well aware
of the dangers of these means of warfare
and how to keep their
effects to a
minimum
the destructive power of a nuclear weapon
is described in terms of the energy it can release
in comparison to the number of tons of conventional
explosives required to release the same
amount of
energy
thus
the detonation
of a 1-megaton nuclear weapon
releases the same amount of energy
as the explosion of one million tons of TNT
"the results of world war II conventional bombing attacks
on dresden, germany can be compared to the attack on hiroshima
in dresden, a british and american operation, feb 12-13, 1945
dropped 2900 tons of conventional bombs, killing, by german
estimates 120,000 to 150,000 people
by comparison, only 150,000 people
were killed or injured at hiroshima"
from a 1966 civil defense pamphlet
Re: from a 1966 civil defense pamphlet
what madness....when you ponder this official stuff in black and white, you get a
chilling sense of their matter of fact ineptitude to govern and protect citizens of the world...only 150,000....golly, gee whiz.......crazy stuff

If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading
you may end up where you are heading
Re: from a 1966 civil defense pamphlet
well brought to light in this poem.
