The tune was hummed and unharmonious
and happy as it slid in unison
upon itself— as if the song (begun
with unseen sparrows, whose melodious,
kurt whistles shape the parsimonious
advancement of today) was threadyarn spun
in fables: rocks and plants and beasts who run
for moral good from more erroneous
assumptions where it's strength who wins the day;
the tune was hummed where something else held sway—
where someone small, unskilled, untrained might play
on instruments without the nuisance of
grand theories of euphonics, but with love—
the tune was hummed in such a childish way.
what of childish things remains
what of childish things remains
