the price of rapture

Post by saw » February 23rd, 2012, 7:44 am

Pastor Mercury ran,
his winged tongue flapped
in the near empty pews
of confounded atonement

reverent tithers waited
in sparse light
for the back up plan
to fruitless consumption

never happy, never fulfilled
after each successive acquisition
the ads promised would unleash
a wild pack of euphoria

how ?....how could the orgiastic
grins of brand new Hyundai buyers
be wrong, the whooping, the gyrating,
the big screen viewers

watching pictures so beautiful,
they had been assured their next purchase
transcends the pain of credit card debt
obfuscates the repo man's shadow

the good reverend chastised
the congregation, belittled their weakness
their selfish addictions, their utter failure
to save a single nickel

then he passed the collection plate
retired to his posh digs
had a snifter of thirty year old brandy
composed his next sermon
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading
