I never dreamed poetry
I had to find her in the crowd
I wrote about the river of noise
the car awoke inside my mouth
honking down the honkers
bonking down the bonkers
a little cloud stuck on a traffic light
flags of all different colors slapping
my consciousness into oblivion
but I resisted the mass
I never felt that Jesus thing
They told us to kiss our ass
goodby, under the class room desk
even though I once became him
I was looking up Jane's yellow dress
my world was in a mess I confess
later I was walking on the moon
back in 1969 when the purple haze
had fallen on the hippie sidewalk
outside of mystic arts
I found Bukowski in a small book store
I was looking for science fiction
for the affliction I was in
I had a prescription for codeine pills
and I thought it was real one more time
I was singing that song, the one they
played on the radio, I needed some more
of them pain pills to open the poetry book
I needed to feel the smack through the crack
on the sidewalk, needed them blues to knock
me down walk on my clown face in outer space
found myself down on the beach out of reach
and some Krishna chanters fed me psychedelic God
but later I read a little Bukowski and got right again
my thoughts were thin, my guts were feeling low
and the Sci-fi Lo-fi was kickin in through the combo

Re: I never dreamed poetry
man, those were the days....LSD and the Buk....and lots of other combinations that set the tone for the rest of our lives.....I came of age, so to speak, in Key West, where we worshiped the sun ( and the mind- altering substances of course)
they walked hand in hand.....we lived communally, like a religious cult without the religion.....or maybe I should say our religion was expanding the mind....eating mangoes and Cuban bananas......black beans and rice......laughing and philosophizing.....jamming words and music as a new way of living.....it's still in me
thanks for the poem.....
