The Blurry Beyond

Amazingly swift with those shiny shears
Snipping away at any new out of place growth
Not to be cast aside upon your well manicured lawn
Either trashed or made to rot in a compost bin
Never to grow freely as it will or ever flower
Lawn, gardens, ponds and squared off hedges
The need to maintain it all every waking hour

Pets, livestock, and a few well fed yard birds
A stream dammed, tapped for fountains and ponds
One’s own personal environment and sense of control
Affecting all unfortunate to be living downstream
Foolishly dabbling in something you do not know
Too high, winding, rocky and wild to ever harness
And molest, or muddy it’s cool, clear free flow

Above you always, the green blurry beyond
The sloping wooded rise and cascading stream
Out past the lawn, gardens, ponds, hedges and pastures
The unfamiliar sounds riding upon a downdraft
Wreath adorned doors locked at night out of fear
A wide picturesque split rail fence perimeter
Barking dog alarms if anything comes near

Morning looking up again at the blurry beyond
While dawn’s first dim trace of light slowly arrives
Never quite able to make out what is looking down at you
Beasts. monsters, spooks and all else you imagine
Whatever it is that makes the dogs bark at night
Coming over, or through both fence and hedge
Now fog drifts in obscuring morning’s light

The fence, hedges, lawn, ponds and gardens
Like everything else barely seen in this thick fog
One’s own personal environment becomes a lot smaller
Wondering what caused that chill down your spine
Go back inside and hide behind your locked door
Now uncertain who is truly master of this domain
Seemingly safe between walls, roof and floor
