Read a Bukowski Poem Today

What the hell is wrong with me
that I can't find anything wrong
with Bukowski, that I never have
read a poem by him, that I did not like
there has to be something wrong, with him

Maybe because I saw Bukowski read live once
at a very big reading that had all sorts of poets
many of my favorite ones were there, two day
reading, I was a ticket taker the first night
so I got to sit in the back room, with the poets

I knew the poet that put organized the reading
but I did not know him well, some local poets
got to read, I was not one of them, tickets
I got to take tickets, I was sitting in the back
room when Bukowski came in with his two
brassy girl friends, I was looking over at them
because I was sitting a few feet away

the night before a local female poet, read a poem
about Bukowski, I had seen her read before
she was a feminist, feminist female poets
were a thing then in town, her poem the night
before Bukowski read, was called "I will not have
Bukowski jack off in my face, no more" it was
a hit with the feminist female poets

my thought, she should be so lucky, to have Hank
jack off in her face, since he was such a great poet
and the only poem she would never be remembered
for, was only a small sensation, because of feminist
female poets, in town that year, she should be so
lucky, to be able to hear him read his poems, live

Bukowski looked very serious, before he got up to read
his brassy woman friends were drinking some of the booze
that was set out for the poets, they were laughing, he
was serious, I don't think he was used to reading in front
of such a big audience in an auditorium, but when he
got up to read, I always say you could hear a pin drop
