he comes back from afghanistan
paralysed from the neck down
she has him ensconced in the attic
so he can see the sky
through the skylight window
and fetches a new man home most nights
to fuck her in the bedroom below
voicebox gone he blinks
once for no twice for yes
she learns his fears
learns rather than crocodile
he can cry real tears
flyboy

Re: flyboy
Seriously powerful piece, David.
Nice to see you again.
Nice to see you again.
Re: flyboy
I want to say, "yeah, so that's how it goes" . . . but really? Just left in the attic, seriously?
But yeah I get it. This economy is high-risk, high-reward. If you lose you're fucked.

Re: flyboy
I see this as indictment on war, and the details that often are not front and center when we speak of wounded veterans....the military, the government, likes to whitewash over the huge numbers of PTSD, as well as traumatic permanent injuries ,while they ramp up their recruiting techniques...i like the angle you took here
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading
you may end up where you are heading
